It's been so long since I made a tiered cake I have forgotten! I have a 12" square on the bottom (2 layer of course), and an 8" round on top. I have some skewers. Will they do the job? How many do you think I need? I wish I had some regular dowels but I am all out. I have also seen in books where people use straws. Any suggestions would be helpful! Thanks!

Straws are much better than skewers. Skewers are thin and can slip out of place. The straws, being thicker, are better. you need at least 4 but 5 is better, to support the 8" tier.
