Please Help Me Figure Out How To Make A Cake Like This...

I am trying to make a cake for Sukkot (a Jewish holiday), and I want to make it look like the picture below. I have no problem with the fruit, but I am trying to figure out the plants. They are called a lulav. Anyway, I figured I would carve the cake to the basic shape, cover with marshmallow fondant and that's where I get stuck. I can use tan marshmallow fondant and weave the holder, but would you use fondant to make the leaves? Another alternative would be to make a rectangular cake and cover it with marshmallow fondant made to look like the mat, make the etrog (fruit) out of a section of cake and then use either marshmallow fondant or modeling chocolate to model the lulav or even pipe it with royal frosting. Does anyone have any good suggestions??? This is my first attempt at something this complicated, so I'd love some help!
Thanks,
Kathi
AngD- why wouln't you do the leaves in mmf? I was thinking that would be the easiest way to do them. Would piping be easier/faster? What about royal icing?
eema2four- Shana Tova! This is for a kiddush to be held outside (in the Sukkah) on the first day of Sukkot. Do you think the buttercream would hold up outside. We live in North Carolina, so it will probably be in the 70's. I guess I was thinking the fondant would hold up better.
Thanks for responding so quickly.
