Ok, so I don't sell my cakes (I only dream to be half as good as you guys on here) but I donate 1-2 cakes each month for hospice patients. My patients 92nd birthday is tomorrow. I start her cake last night. In order to get my oven at 350, well maybe I turn it to 285, 280, who knows, it is a crap shoot everytime. Well, my oven thermometer reads 350, yeah lets go. Nope after an hour in the oven, my cake is a soupy mess and sinks. Then this morning, I pick up 100 roses to make her a bouquet and when I unwrap them at work, all the petals fall off, now I have 100 green sticks with thorns and leaves. And they say Happy Birthday. Thanks for listening all.

OH! I am so sorry you are having troubles!
You should take back to flowers to the florist! They always give new flowers if the ones you have are not satisfactory!

I hope things go better from now on! For giving away your cakes to patients who need a lift up is a very special gift...you deserve to be rewarded with good karma!

Thank you for replying StepOmni. Yes, I will be taking the flowers back. I have the bag of petals for them also, they said I could exchange them. It was nice of you to read my rant. I am usually not a whiner.

I bought a plain cake iced in white butterceam at BJ's I will decorate it with the icing I already made. I hear you about the gossip, me too.

Nothing wrong with that! (lol both things!) I did that for Father's Day. My grampa loves this strawberry danish tart at a local bakery and we ordered it plain. I think they thought I was weird... it worked out though! Glad to hear things did for you too! icon_biggrin.gif

Obviously your oven has gone haywire, or your thermometer is way off. I replace my thermometers every once in awhile, I think they get off whack. Good things come to folks that give, and you will be rewarded, whether it is in this life or next. I hope your gift turned out alright after your problems.

You worked so hard! I hope you got your flowers replaced. My grandmother is in a retirement home and I know how much what you do for them means. I know it brightens their day! Things will turn up, like Step0mni says. Good things you do always come back in the end. Sometimes there are just little bumps.

Also, I totally agree with the gossip comment. I love reading it! I can relate most of the time!

Sorry about your bad luck. I vote for taking the petal-less roses back to the florist. It sounds like you need a new oven.

Well, I definitely gave up today! My fondant didn't turn out, my cake broke, and then where it broke on the edges it started sagging! NOT working out for me today! But, the pictures looked good and I think I covered everything up well!

How did everything go for you jobartwo??

Thank you to all of you for your kind words. Well, the produce place where I bought the roses refunded my money. Because I was running out of time, I called a florist near the nursing home and they were kind enough to donate an arrangement of 2 doz. roses (not 92) but it worked. I bought a round cake at BJ's and scraped the decorations off and re-decorated used all of my icing and decorations. My patient was so happy and appreciative, it was worth all of the misfortunes. In all of the chaos, I forgot to take a picture. All ended well, though.

Well, at least you got the money back and some donated flowers! That was very nice!
Glad to hear it ended well and that your patient love your gift!
See! Good karma DOES come to people who deserve it!

Sounds like it is time to get a new oven. It's an expense; but I suppose you make your family meals in it too! Too bad the cake was ruined for your patient's 92nd b'day. It is very nice of you to donate the cakes.

Since you ordered so many roses, I suppose the florist figured they could throw a few bad ones it. A shame! Sounds like they threw in more than a few!

glad to read the day ended on a happy not. As I always tell my kids "Good things happen to those who do good things!" and in the end, you will be rewarded with all your kindness!

jabartwo--- glad all worked out in the end. Sorry it wasn't want you planned.

Kudos for what you do for Hospice. I am sure all enjoy the warmth and love you put into all your work you do. A smile at times for those patients are few and far between. It would be my reward to see that from them.

i know how frustrsting the oven deal can be. i went from november last year until mother's day this year w/out mine working at all. i asked for it to be fixed for my mother's day present. it worked until last week & now the thermostat has stopped working. icon_cry.gif the oven won't even turn on unless it's at 375 & then it doesn't stop at 375, it just keeps getting hotter and hotter. icon_mad.gif any time i need an oven now it's off to dear-ol'-mom's house!!!! thank goodness she lives close by. i'm sorry you're having oven troubles too but glad to hear your cake turned out ok.
