i think they work VERY well. As long as you make sure they are soaked with water, you shouldn't have a problem....
They work well as far as the baking, I just have a hard time getting them to wrap around and stay around the pan. I read on another thread that you can use cut up strips of terrycloth towels the same way, cut them into strips and soak in water. I haven't tried it, but I would like to and I think that would be much easier than the bulky strips.
You can use any towel. I usually use an old towel cut into strips to fit around the cake pan and wet them with cold water. I save money and they work just as good.
I refuse to bake without them. I have a rubbermaid container full of various sizes to fit all my pans.
I have hooks in on my pantry wall for several sizes of the strips. That way, when I need a strip for a 9x13 pan, it is already the right size. I simply wet it and put it on over the botton of the pan. No need to re-pin. This saves tons of time. The strips are miraculous. Terrycloth does work also, but I found it wore out much faster than the purchased strips.
