Hello, question, was talking to a lady in Michaels. She was looking to do her daughters wedding cake. She started asking me questions about making cakes and told me her daughter wanted a shell/beach theme. She asked me if I knew how to do that and I gave her some tips on it. She asked me what would I charge to make it for her. The wedding is in two weeks, she wanted three tiers. I asked how many people and she said 70-80. I told her $210.00. Was I too high?? Opinions please. Thanks Cheffie icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

not at all that is about $2.60 per serving. My wedding cake was 3.75 a serving when I got married. A wedding cake is a lot of work. If you are working for less than $8.00 it is so not worth it for you. Your time and tallent is worth something, not to mention the ingredients and material required to get it done. Don't forget delivery, gas isn't free. If she thought it was too much, the lady was just rying to get something for nothing.

Absolutely not. I will not do a wedding cake for under 5 dollars a slice now. Why? Cuz ingredients for wedding cakes cost more due to the sheer amount you end up using!

Thanks I figured at a minimum of $3.00 per person. Now the kicker she wants a cake for $30.00. It was so hard for me not to burst out laughing right there in the store. I just thanked her and wished her luck. Cheffie icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

I know as I was leaving she was looking for a shell shaped pan.I guess I could have offered to do the shell shaped cake but I still would have charged at least $75.00 to do that one. I wish I could be a fly on the wall at the wedding and see what she ends up with. icon_lol.gif Cheffie icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

I doubt she could do sheet cakes from a mix with canned frosting for that many people for $30, unless she's going to flip and decorate them directly onto the serving table without using a board, ROFL! icon_rolleyes.gificon_wink.gif

Some people truly don't get it. And they probably never will.

I just hope her daughter is ok with the fact that her mom doesn't know how to do a cake and is cheaping out on her wedding cake! icon_surprised.gif

I hope you gave her your phone number. She's going to have a rude awakening if she thinks shes going to find this wedding cake for $30.00. She's going to have to come back down to reality and look for a cake decorator. But then again, knowing that she's looking for a $30.00 cake I don't think I would make it for her if she did decide for me to do it for the $210. She may end up looking for someone to screw over just to get her $30.00 cake!

ROFL $30.00 she must be nuts. That wouldnt cover the ingredients. I have had several people like that too. I get to the point that I am like if you dont want pay then I am not making it. I thought a lady asking for $100 3 tier cake was nuts this lady needs to be in a institute...haha.

OMG--I wonder if the poor bride knows that her MOM is trolling the cake decorating aisles at local craft stores trying to arrange a hook-up for a $30 wedding cake icon_eek.gif

Sounds like mommydearest is PO'D about having to get a wedding together in 2 weeks and would get a secret delight out of telling guests, "Well, I know it's a crappy cake, but what could I do with only 2 weeks notice??????" icon_rolleyes.gif I'll be she winds up with cupcakes with sprinkles on top!

It really would be fun to be a fly on the wall at this "affair" icon_surprised.gif

Now, if she calls you at the last minute for the cake, make sure that you double your first price --and don't back down!

Well I wish the lady the best of luck. icon_smile.gif You can't even get a full sheet cake at Kroger or anywhere around here for under $45. And that's with just the simple roses or balloons or something like that. I can understand if she doesn't have the money to spend that much, but in that case, see if you can borrow someone's pans and buy a few cake mixes for $1, or ask family members or something for donations. I could do a 1/4 sheet for her for $30 icon_smile.gif

Yikes! The bride would be better off eloping if they are trying to keeps costs down. I have NEVER heard of a $30.00 wedding cake...how ridiculous is that? And, what nerve that she even dared to ask such an insulting question. Some people just don't have a clue. Thanks for the laugh.
