Need Urgent Help With This Picture --- Draping Fondant
Decorating By cakesbyjess Updated 15 Aug 2006 , 6:11pm by cakesbyjess
Hello ... My mom and I have 5 wedding cakes to do for tomorrow (can I say WHAT WERE WE THINKING?!?!), and we're on number 3. Dumb as it may be, we're saving the hardest one for last. I'm attaching a picture of the cake I need help with. I can't tell if the cakes are covered in fondant first and then the drapes are attached, OR if the cakes are covered in draped fondant and then the drapes are attached. Or maybe it's neither of those options and I'm not seeing it. I have not much experience with drapes (again, what was I thinking when I took the order for this one?!?!?), so I was hoping some fellow CC'ers out there might be able to point me in the right direction. Thanks soooooo much in advance!!!!!!!! ![]()
I can't really tell from the picture whether or not the cake is covered in fondant or smoothed buttercream, but probably fondant. Then put the drapes on last and secure them well with something like gel or hidden toothpicks. Good luck! ![]()
that looks soo pretty - just really bumping you and to say goodluck - it might help to search the forums and see if u get a quick answer there
It looks to me like the cakes are covered in fondant and then drapes are added. The corners look as if they have draped "tails" with the flowers covering the "meeting of all the drapes".
ok - have to ask this (and I am NOT criticizing - just curious) . . . how do you not do at least a small test cake for a technique or cake you haven't tried before or are trying to duplicate prior to the night before the order is due? I'd be beside myself worrying if I hadn't tested it out.
What a beautiful cake. I think it could be either buttercream or fondant. I've never done drapes...yet, so I can't help you on that one. I think you could attach the drapes to the buttercream or the fondant the same way. I think it will be beautiful no matter what you do.
5 wedding cakes in one day...you are ambitious.
I agree with girltrap....fondant drapes are made by doing LONG pieces of fondant, start out with one end of drape at base of corner, bring up to top of corner and "attach" (either hidden toothpick or fondant adhesive) then gather and pleat mid drape letting it fall slightly, secure at other corner, and let fall to bottom of corner. I would probably do fondant covering on the cake so the fondant would stick better to the other fondant. Good Luck with all your cakes!
Thanks EVERYONE for all of the responses! I am always so thrilled with these forums and how quick and willing to help everyone is!!! ![]()
jmt1714 ... You're absolutely right. Why didn't I try a test cake for this technique? I always do, but this time I didn't. I guess I ran out of time and just figured somehow I'd make it work.
I'm already beyond stressed about all of the cakes, so I guess the added stress of that one isn't too much to bear. ![]()
Anyway, thanks again for your help! I can't tell you how much I appreciate it!!!! ![]()

Thanks leepat ... I appreciate your kind words! I edited my original post to include the fact that my mom (a seasoned cake decorator) and I are both working on these cakes. So, it's more bearable than if it were just me, but nonetheless, it's still a lot of work!!! Forgot to mention that there are lots of other non-wedding cakes for tomorrow and Sunday, too. I will definitely post the pictures of the wedding cakes in the next couple of days. Thanks again! Back to caking ... ![]()
Hello
I agree with girltrapped
It looks like the cakes are covered with fondat & the draping added after; also the corner drapes look like they were added after the base border and the flowers are definitly covering all the joints.
I am sure yours will be just as beautiful.
Good luck
ciao
Wellllllll ... it's 2:00 AM and we're just about finished!!! We've been working nonstop since 9:00 this (or I should say, yesterday) morning!!! Our legs are hurting!! This fondant drape cake turned out nice ... I am very pleased with it! I'll post pictures of the finished cake, with roses, tomorrow night after all of the cakes have been delivered and all of Sunday's cakes are done. On second thought, I may not be back to post pictures until Sunday ... ![]()
Thanks again, everyone! I ADORE CC and all of its members!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ![]()

I can't tell either but I am guesssing you can do BC underneath then add the drapes no one will know it really looks like the drapes cover most of the cake but also for it to have that nice neat look you should do fondant then add fondant drapes good luck to you
OK ... I just posted pictures of all 5 wedding cakes from yesterday. Wow, am I glad this weekend is over. I think I got a total of 10 hours of sleep since Friday. Absolutely crazy!!!!! Anyway, I was pretty happy with the way the cakes turned out. I hope the brides loved their cakes. Thanks again to everyone for all of the support and suggestions. I love CC!!!!! ![]()
