I have to join in on praising the Melvira method. I could not smooth a cake to save my life until Melvira shared her secret. She is awesome!!!!!!!
Count me in too....she's my hero!!!
One thing I realised last week. Get at least two of them. I had two cakes to do and the one was chocolate buttercream and the other was white buttercream. I started with the chocolate first and the roller got slightly coloured which would have stained my white buttercream cake.

Yep a minimum of two for sure! I have four. Two for light colors and two for dark colors. I have one of each out but if for any reason I drop it on the floor or get something on it I have another clean one ready to go instead of having to wait for the dirty one to dry. Works great!
Will someone please post how to do the roller method that Melvira posted? I tried to find it, but no luck. TIA

Can anyone tell me how to wash and dry the rollers?
I just put some dishsoap on the roller and then squish it in. Then put it under warm running water and squish and twist until all of the soap is out. Pretty much the same thing I do with them when I use paint, except my hands don't get as dirty since the icing isn't as clingly as the paint
The first time I used the Melvira method on a cake my fiance walked by, stopped, backed up, looked again, and said "Wow, those cakes are really smooth!" It was fantastic of her to share this wonderful technique!
The only problem I have - and it's not Melvira's fault - is when I try new buttercream recipes. The last few I tried didn't crust and I was heartbroken that I couldn't use the Melvira method. I put the cakes in the fridge for a long while and tried to marathon roll, but it doesn't work half as well as when you use crusting buttercream.
Maybe we could ask that everyone who posts a BC recipe tp please specify if it's a crusting or non-crusting recipe.
I just love this site. Everyone shares thier secrets and we all learn new techniques here. Thanks to all who share here. I never get tired of learning new ways to do something.

Awwww....shucks! ![]()
I ACCEPT!! But it has to be a BIG wedding... and I want the cake that KarenMichi won the 2006 wedding cake contest here on CC with... or Aine2... anything she makes... and NancysFancy has to make wedding cookies, and I want a string quartet, and 7 bridesmaids and groomsmen, and... what? Oh... you were just being emphatic to make a point? So we're...not... getting married? *sniff* That's ok, my DH wouldn't want to share me anyway!
Ok, goofiness aside, thank you so much for your moral support and excitement. I have never felt as good as you all have made me feel here on CC with your love of this technique. I am hoping to use your enthusiasm to turn this into some sort of line of products. Wish me luck, and I will always come to you guys with my 'new inventions' first!! I just love you all!! Oh, and if anyone has questions or feedback, please feel free to PM me or drop me an email. I am happy to help or hear what you think!!
And here I was getting all excited about a big wedding and I was going to ask if I could be in the bridal party. Heck, I'd even offer to be a goomsmen (I could've worn a tux and a fake mustache - nobody would've known).
Rats!
I just have to toot your horn too....I can FINALLY get a perfectly smooth cake now too.
thank you!!

I want a wedding now, and I want wedding cake too. darn.
It took me several recipes, but today IT FINALLY WORKED!!! And Melvira - YOU ROCK!!
Dear Melvira & Melvira followers
,
I have tried this method and yes it works wonders on the smoothing. BUT, my question is do the majority of you roll right onto the crusted buttercream OR do you use a piece of viva papertowel in between the roller and the cake?????????????
I have done the viva papertowel and I ALWAYS end up with like little pieces of lint or something. Please tell me what you all do and I will definitely try it because with the roller is the smoothest I've ever gotten a cake I just want to do away with having to pick out the spotty lint like pieces. ![]()
Thanks for your suggestions!!!!!!!!!!
Jannie, I roll right on the cake, and you know what I do to prevent any lint on the cake?? I roll the roller head with a lint roller before rolling the cake. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Was that like the most confusing sentence on earth??? How many times can I say ROLL in one sentence!
I hope you understood the basics of what I was trying to say!!
sorry but I have all the right materials high density rollers and all and I still haven't figured it out I still use the paper towel
I am jumping on the bandwagon too and saying how much I lvoe this method. I am horrible at icing cakes and since using this method, I have received compliments on my buttercream cakes! Thank you so much Melvira!
I've never been as happy as I was in the moment I made my first truly smooth cake!!!! (I know... I need a life!) But seriously... the Melvira method has changed the way I look at my cake decorating, and gave me a lot more confidence that I can make something look decent now, instead of looking like a rank beginner's!
I'll add my thanks, Melvira!!! And should you decide to come out with a line of smoothing stuff, I'll be a tester for you, no problem! ![]()
