After seeing the stenciling on the cake challenge, I tried it on a practice bit of frosting spread on a board. Here is a little more on a fondant covered dummy. This is what I learned...
Don't load it on! A little goes a long way and if you have too much on the stencil, it will glob up.
Scrape it till it is almost all off. I might try putting it on with a sponge next time.
You can use scotch tape on fondant to hold the stencil.
If you goof it up, you can always cover it with a vine and roses ![]()
Cake dummies are a bit of a challenge.
Other than that...it's lots of fun!
That is SO pretty PennySue! I love the colors you practiced with too! You know, you can also sponge onto stencils with food paste colors too. You don't get the raised 3-D effect like this but it's pretty. Heck! You could do a combo of both!
Tiggy, I use buttercream normally but royal would work too.
have fun stenciling all!!

=o)
WoW that is neat thanks for sharing. I like your border too!
This plaque was stenciled using royal on gum paste. The stencil was an embossing stencil, the really thin kind for scrapbooking. I used a thin coat of royal and after it dried, I painted it with a very small brush and luster dust with lemon extract. To do the embossing, I put the royal on with an offset spatula and quickly pulled the stencil up evenly by two corners.
I love the results of this technique, too. It's obviously easier on a flat surface that's applied later.

What part is the stenciling you all are talking about?
Is it the part under the rose vines?
Is this the technique where you lay like a plastic stencil around the cake and spread the icing on?
Has anyone found some good stencils?
Thanks for any info.
Pennysue, I can not believe how GEORGOUS your cake is. I was thinking about going out & stencil hunting right after the show. I think I am going to goto AC Moore with my 40% off coupon tonight!
Thank you again for sharing your experience with us.

You guys are sooo awesome! Thank you for the kind words! The base was fondant. The rest was royal icing, something that I'm not too used to using. Here is just another little shot of another stencil I just did. I painted some pretty stiff royal icing instead of using a spatula. Worked pretty well I think. I like the texture with out the bulk.
PennySue.
Do you think that buttercream could be used, on fondant, instead of royal Icing? If not why?
Thank in advance,

Stenciling is so pretty with so little effort..And it makes it look like
you were up all night decorating a cake. It's very elegant, beautriful and uncommon.. Costco and Walmart would never do that !!
Thanks for sharing PennySue..it's very beautiful ![]()
Costco and Walmart would never do that !!
Lets hope not. ![]()
I think that BCF would work on fondant. Just be sure that there are no air bubbles in the frosting or the fondant.
Be sure that the base frosting (if it is BCF) is really hard before using a stencil, use a really light touch and refridgerate it in between moving the stencil. My first stencil was on BCF. It wasn't hard to do.
PennySue,
I turned out so great! Looks like my stenciling days are just beginning!
LeeAnn-
That elvis cake is awesome! I cant see where the musical notes ran..?
It hardly even looks real it is so smooth. So you used a stencil for that? I remember that cake when it was posted and I assumed it was an edible image or something. Great work
that is an beautiful cake !! i have one question was it buttercream or royal frosting?
I went to AC moore today & bought 2 stencils. I am going to try them. I will post pics when I do. It will be 1 or 2 weeks
