Welcome to Cake Central. It does take practice to fit the lower edge to the cake. The video at atecousa.com may help you visualize how to make it work. It helps to slightly elevate the cake.

First smooth the top so that the top of the cake has no air pockets at all.

Then lift the 'frige' of the fondant and pull it slightly before smoothing it down - like you would smooth a skirt down. You need to do this lifting, slight pulling and smoothing repeatedly all the way round the cake. You'll then need a smoother tool to get it really smooth all round. You really need to see someone do it as it's very hard to describe. Take a look at the video link that JoAnnB has given you.

Make your fondant larger than you need it. Put the cake up on a can or something, then the wrinkles happen below the cake level and you can just cut them off.
