Good thing I saw it. I turned the bag upside down to cut it open and I saw it on the inside of the bag.

Yuck. I think I threw up a little....

I wander if that can be considered an extra and charge for it. It's amazing how realistic it looks. Just kidding, that's so gross! Could you identify the body? I'm thinking email the company, send them back the bug and make them supply you with a years worth of nasty free cake mixes for free! Unless of course they would prefer this info being posted all over a reputable cake decorating web site.

What type of bug was it? I've heard of weebles/weevels in the flour but I've never heard of anything being INSIDE a bag of cake mix....

I'd call the customer service hotline on the back of the package and make them aware of it immediately they'll most likely appologize for any inconvience and send you a coupon for a free box of cake mix... but it needs to be known by them so they can make sure the packaging plate is in proper order icon_smile.gif

I recently called about Pepsi-Co products, the cans were really weak at the seam of the can and it felt like it was going to bust just by holding it so they took all the coding info from me and sent me a coupon for a free 12 pack and notified the warehouse in which they are packaged and said they were extremely greatful to have the information because now they can make it better icon_smile.gif

Oh, that is just gross. I cant even think about it. It reminds me of once when i was a kid and my mom opened a can of green bean and found a grasshopper. I just don't eat canned green bean anymore..............don't want to think about cake.

Justfrosting............was the bug dead or alive? If it was alive it may not be DH's fault. A couple or so times over my years of cooking I have discovered a live bug in a freshly purchased packaged item but every time this has happened there was a very small hole or tear in the packaging. The bug/bugs can and will get into food products like this in the distribution centers or on the grocery store shelf.
If the bug was dead and no teeny tiny hole could be found in the packaging then you definitely should contact Duncan Hines.

Either way, I am sorry this happened to you! There is nothing that turns my guts more than a foreign object of any kind being in my food!

Make sure you save the box... I'm sure they'd like to know the batch number, etc.

I got a defective package of diapers years ago (the tapes were cut wrong, and pulled off), and sent a pretty nice letter to the makers of Huggies letting them know what happened. They sent me 10 coupons for free packages of diapers, plus several $2 off coupons.

It always pays to let the company know about things like this - and giving them the specifics helps them look into it to make sure it doesn't happen again.

If the package sat too long on the shelf then that may be the problem. I've heard theat Weevels can be activated in packaged flour products after a long period of time. If the expiration date is pretty short than it could be because it came from the actual DH factory.

I have had this problem from time to time with mixes or even just flour, they say the product can get infected anywhere, whether in your own pantry or even just at the supermarket. Those little flour bugs are insane, they get into everything, including SEALED bags. I once went to make a box of brownies (DH ironically) and found some dead ones in the box. Ick, but I figured, well they are just in the box so I dumped the mix into my bowl and I was going to make those brownies...but then, uck!! They were inside the mix too. BLEAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH I am going to go throw up now too icon_smile.gificon_smile.gif

For the record I now seal ALL flour products in tupperware. If the tupperware's too big for the box of mix I take the inner bag out of the box, cut out the product name/instructions and put both into a tupperware. I figure, that way if there is anything scary living in my pantry it won't get into my newly purchased mix, and if there is anything scary living in my mix it won't get OUT into my pantry. Trust me, as gross as the bug is, it's even worse when you discover you have to dump your entire pantry into the trash can because the bug brought its friends. Argh!

Arrrrrrrrrrggggghhhh! I know how disgusted you were. I found some small worms in my rice some months ago. I almost had a stroke in my kitchen. I didn't think it had sat in my pantry that long but hey, I hardly eat rice but my family does. They had a bad habit of not storing it (the rice) in the many containers I have just for that reason. I had to get containers after a similiar thing happened to me with my flour years ago. I didn't know any better (I do now). It really grossed me out and urrghhhhhhhhh, I know why you would want to throw up!

Sometimes these things happen, call the company and let them know about it.

And for my own bug stories, I have found bugs in frozen veggies, sometimes they just get through. Found them in flour, found worm in rice. Once made a soup with rice and fed it to a man at work (said it was the best soup he ever ate) didn't realize that those things floating on top were worms they had picked up the color of the tomatoes and looked orange, so i thought they were carrots, luckly no one else ate it. But it didn't kill him.

UGH!!!!!

Last year I made some of my favorite peach topping for pancakes - it is made with frozen peaches, and when I was having leftovers of the topping the next day (yes, just the topping, straight from my fridge with a spoon! icon_redface.gif ) I found a worm in it! It was tiny and attached to one of the peach slices, so I figure it was in the frozen peaches. Yuck yuck YUCK! I have not been able to make anything with peaches ever since, and I am so sad about that because I really do (did) love them!

This happened to my sister and it was a nightmare. She had to throw out all of her food and she now puts everything in airtight containers.

How gross. I'm curious if it was still alive, too.

I am glad I sift my mixes now! I knew there was a reason!

I once found some kind of plastic wrap INSIDE of an eggroll. like from the frozen foods at the grocery store.

Oh wait, this grossed me out more though. In a dorm I was getting lunch in the cafeteria. I was just about to put some lettuce on my plate when i noticed a cocroach crawling around in there. I did not want to set off the alarm bells, but I told one of the workers there and they changed the lettuce, but I did not have a salad that day.

good old bugs..... try being in the Navy on a deployed ship at sea for 6 months and routinely finding them in everything... your food, your bed, your soap, your clothes... and nothing you did could stop them... it just happened because what could they do, JUMP OVERBOARD... hahahahahah... no just kidding it wasn't that bad, but they often had the tendency to hide out in the dry storage like cereal and stuff! And we used powdered eggs, so I don't eat eggs anymore icon_smile.gif

I know this is gross, but if you think about it, that cake mix has flour in it, which is made from wheat, which is grown outside where bugs are. The manufacturers do everything they can to keep stuff like that from happening, but it is impossible for them to completely stop it. It is going to happen, but sorry it happened to you. I know it turns my stomach, but it's just one of those facts of life.
