I'm sure the look is "huh"? LOL

This past year I have been teaching a class at our Sunday school called "Our Whole Lives" and the curriculum is a healthy sexuality class. We talked about the usual like anatomy, how babies are made, contraceptives and STD and abuse prevention, but ALSO we talked about how to build healthy relationships, how to talk about sex before entering into it, masturbation, sex other than intercourse, and about different forms of sexuality - heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual and transgender, and so on.

I don't want to make anything naughty, but with the theme would be good... The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is male and female symbols on top of cupcakes, but that's pretty uncreative...

so, suggestions? (and I don't do gumpaste figures!)

Maybe a silly suggestion - how about something with 'the birds & the bees' on it?!

How about something that highlights love of self because self respect and respect for others is all part of the sexual thing. It could be simple like an inspirational saying and a pic of two people......?

Ok, Now I have heard it all! icon_biggrin.gif

I like the birds and bees suggestion.

Not creative but you could do a couple holding hands with a baby bump in a fbt.

Did you use a particular Bible Verse throughout the lessons. You could base the cake around the Bible Verse. If you do not like writing on cakes you could print the Bible Verse in a pretty font, then have an edible image made. Then you can do any design you want around the image .
Here a few ideas to get your thoughts going.

Well, this is for Ethical Society (not religious - kind of like Unitarian, (and the Unitarian and United Universalists created this curriculum). So, bible verses aren't appropriate. But even if they were, my writing is HORRIBLE! LOL

Hmm... this is good. We talked a lot about good communication and respecting people's wishes and so on.... I'll think about this too.

See, and you thought it was a silly suggestion! LOL I think I will make cupcakes with birds and bees mini chocolate transfers and make the cupcakes with the grass tip and maybe some tiny drop flowers... I've NEVER tried drop flowers before... is it hard? All these tips, UNTRIED! LOL

Also... how hard is it to put small chocolae transfers on wire? Or should I just stick with those lollipop sticks? (They seem kind of thick)... I think this will be DARLING!

Still searching for decent, yet SIMPLE bee and bird images!

Bees and birds can be made with royal icing, right. The cupcakes with either bees or a bird on top?

I like the bird/bees cupcakes idea. I did some bug cupcakes for my son's class including this bee (pardon the bad pic):

Image

I just added a little tab on the bottom when I was making the CT, made sure I kind of mounded the icing and stuck him on. No wires, sticks or anything. I have also (for another project) put toothpics on the back of the CT and used that to hold it up.

Didn't have time to read the suggestions, but the first thing that came to mind was:
Cake with a circle and a slash through it that says sex.
Cake that says "just say no!" maybe with a list of diseases.
Good luck and let us know what you come up with.

what is wrong with u??
i heard about the bird and the bees when i was eight, the story is for kids who wouldn't understand the real idea of sex. I like the idea of the boy and girl were sitting on the couch. It's way more realistic, otherwise the kids will think u c them as babies, and then they'll b offended.

I think the birds & bees idea is cute, too. I don't think the kids would be offended at all, or think you see them as babies. You just spent the year teaching them, I'm sure they know you don't see them that way.

I'm a UU, and though I haven't used that curriculum yet in our church, we are thinking about finding the training for it. Did you like it?

Hmmm.... interesting way to talk to someone?

Anyway, I think you need to know my audience. We had 3 girls and 4 boys in our class - pretty small and we don't talk about just the "bad" side of having sex, but also how it's a great part of life, but to MAKE it a great part of life, you have to make good decisions about it and that's what we are aiming for - no reference to when it should happen or with whom, but just to protect your heart (rumors and abuse) and your health...

Now, with that said, FIVE of the seven in the class are EXTREMELY shy and introverted - like painfully shy. Always before we have sent this year of class to the local Unitarian church but we thought it would be better for them to have our class taught by us this time. So, I had the training for it...

I "could" have the couple on the couch, but what does that symbolize really? Do I want to show them groping? hmmm... might be embarassing... Do I want to show them sitting awkwardly? Well, that doesn't go with the "let's be open about talking about it".... Do I want to make it "her or him gesturing "no"... again, no, because we aren't teaching abstinence (though the hope is that if they have all the information and know how to make good decisions is taht they'll DELAY having sex)...

The birds and the bees is an innocent "everyone knows what you are talking about"... I can put it with a saying like "congratulations OWL class, we learned so much more than the birds and the bees" or something like that... Or "Human Sexuality - so much more than the Birds and the Bees.."

The training was GREAT. It's a full weekend -starts Friday, all day saturday and part of Sunday. I know SEVERAL people in our class who had volunteered to teach this class were a little skeptical at first and wanted to know why there wasn't more emphasis on NOT having sex, but once they got the training, they realized that this approach is honest and it really is a way to get kids to wait until they are READY without passing judgement and it DOES protect kids better from so many "bad" parts of having sex.

Now, in college I was a sex ed. Peer educator and then I worked for YEARS in residential life in college, so I've had TONS of previous exposure, but this was the first time I was teaching young teens and besides them always being embarassed about it (you should have seen the crossed arms during the section on masturbation! LOL) I think it is GREAT... I mean, really, sex IS a part of "our whole lives" and don't we wish our kids to have healthy friendships and when ready, healthy sexual relationships. I think when we started the training, they asked us what did we learn BEFORE having sex for the first time and do you wish you knew more? The resounding answer was YES.

Now... I think I will ask the leader of our Ethical Society of she feels "birds and bees' is appropriate or if it's what we are FIGHTING against in mentality and not like it, but I think if I make a plaque that says: OWL graduation: Human Sexuality so much more than the 'Birds and the Bees' then she would be good with it...

Did anyone ever get told by saying something about birds and bees? LOL

Oh this is cute! We talk a lot about the rumors and such... There is a lot of NEGATIVITY associated with teen sex too - kids get really ostracized if it's found out, believe it or not! (Of course, mostly girls - those double standards are going STRONG)

This is SO funny! Yes, I am guilty of trying to tell my daughter about birds and bees. icon_lol.gif I just thought it was so cute! She was about 9 and after a 10 minute story of how the birds pollenate the flowers and such...she looked at me and said, "WHAT???" icon_confused.gif I laughed so hard!! Then I gave her the REAL talk. Just thought it would be a good story for her to tell later when she is older about how her crazy mom tried explaining sex with the birds and the bees. icon_rolleyes.gif
Since when did sex become so taboo anyways? It is an amazing and rewarding parts of our lives. I think it is great that you are teaching teens that there is so much more than the birds and bees. Wish I knew more growing up..........If people (especially parents) weren't so scared to talk about it with their children and not make it such a 'dirty' thing, I believe there would be less STD'd and more teens waiting until they are truly ready. icon_wink.gif

Since this was an "OWL" class, how about making an owl cake? There is a tutorial on making one on this site.
