I just have to share.. I got in my first order of SWEETEX. I've read so much about it that I just knew I had to try it!!! CAN I TELL YOU WOW icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif That stuff is amazing!!!!! I can literally sit down with the bowl and spoon and eat it like that!!! icon_razz.gif I haven't had a taste for my frosting in a LONG time, but when I tried this OMG!!!! I'll be honest it is a little sweeter than the bc with crisco, BUT it does NOT have that greasy aftertaste!!!!!! thumbs_up.gif I can't explain how good it is...
I also ordered Lorann oils. (SEE I'm stepping up in the world Hahahaa) I made a batch of bc up (just because) and I only took out about 1/2cup of bc to put coconut oil in. (I didn't want to waste a whole batch in case I didn't like it.) WELL, OMG icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif It tasted like the inside of a mounds candybar!!! It is truly that good!!! R U ready for this... the BF liked it and he's totally caked out!!! thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif
I can't comment on how it smoothes on the cake yet as I have no need to make a cake (I will say it looked 100%smoother in the KA). I do have an order for next weekend, I want to see how the frosting holds up between now and then. The bc w/crisco always breaks up on me. I'll have to let you know how i makes out!!!!

Oh.. here's the company I went through in case anyone was wondering. The sweetex came in 1lb containers. (they were containers like you would get at the grocery store deli) I was ok w/that as I put the sweetex in more airtight containers.

it is Hi-ratio shortening.. From what i read (maybe someone w/more experience can help out here) it smoothes better on the cake and it gets fluffier so you can get more frosting out of the "batch". My main reason of purchasing the sweetex is because I CANNOT frost a cake smooth to save my life!!! I figured I give this a try. (I can use all of the help I can get)haha

btw.. elmo shows how I am ALL of the time LOL

You see???...this is what I LOVE about this website! I learn something valuable EVERYDAY from all of you!
Your explaination of Sweetex was great...I have never heard of it before! I am not a huge fan of icing to begin with ( I personally find the stuff way too sweet to eat!). When I DO eat regular buttercream icing, I ALWAYS detect that greasy feeling and taste! Are you saying that the Sweetex does NOT have that feel or taste? I will be ordering it PRONTO if that is the case!
Now, for the oils you spoke of...I am trying to add some different flavors to my cakes lately...I'm just plain bored with the traditional flavors. I went on the website you gave the link for, and saw all the many flavorings they offered. Now, I just need to know HOW to use them correctly! I hope this isn't a stupid question, but I really do NOT know how to use the oils correctly! Do they go in the cake batter itself, or in the frosting? Sure hope I don't sound totally STUPID by asking this, I just have never used them! Not only do I know WHERE to use them, but HOW MUCH of it would I use? I would really appreciate someone helping me learn about this. Thanks so much!

As for the sweetex.. I was told by the only cake supply store here (that does NOT carry sweetex) that it was the best on the market and they don't carry it due to the fact that for them it was too expensive. I thought the price was pretty reasonable online. Try to do a search onsite here for the sweetex as I'm sure there's more info on it. I only bought it for the few reasons I stated before (I just don't want to give you the wrong info) Personally, I did find it had a LESS greasy taste to it. Now remember it does taste a little sweeter than the crisco bc, but there's no aftertaste. It's hard to explain icon_razz.gif


As for the oils, this is the first time i've used them. From all of the reading i've done, you DONT use alot of the oil. I guess a few drops will get you a LONG way!!!! I was impressed w/the taste (of the coconut) it was VERY yummy!!! I think you can put in the batter?? not sure exactly (maybe someone can correct me?) I want to try that as well.

So do you use the Sweet-ex in place of Crisco, or is it an already mixed up icing? Does it crust well and is it good for decorating?

I'm all for anything that makes smoothing a cake easier!

You use the Sweetex in place of the crisco. It is a shortening. I can smooth much better with my Sweetex based icing! As for the oils - you can use them in your cake mix and/or you frosting. Just a few drops go a long way. They're very concentrated.

What about the alpine shortening that is listed on the bakers kitchen's website. It says its a different brand but equal in quality and stability.

Has anyone tried the Alpine shortening?

I use the alpine and ive read that it is better than the sweetex, but ive never tried the sweetex so don't take my word on that.

I would like to try the oils though, so you make a yellow cake for example and put a few drops of oil and it makes it a different flavored cake?? really??

I ordered the alpine from countrykitchen.com and it was like $4 for a tub (like 1 lb. or something).

The baker's kitchen sells Alpine for $1.69 per lb. and sweetex for $1.89 per lb. I think you may get a better deal at this site.
