My first cake disaster in a year! :'( I made a luau themed cake for my friend's daughter who's turning 6. The plan was to bring it to work with me on Friday since the party's Saturday. Thursday night I came home from work to find DH had unhooked the propane tank to the oven to build a deck. tapedshut.gif Then I find out I'm out of sugar. I get the batters made and carry them next door to my SIL and beg use of her oven. I need to make icing, but I can't leave her w/ the cakes b/c she can't bake AT ALL and would have no idea if a cake were done. So there I sit. Get the cakes baked and walk them back home. The gumpaste pieces I made two days before never dried b/c we had high humidity - so I melted some candy melts and slapped that on the back to provide some support. In the end, I was amazed how quickly it came together and was quite happy with it.

Friday I box it up and stop by my mom's to drop off DS. She lives on a big hill & I couldn't park a on the flat spot of her driveway. It's amazing how quickly a cake can fall - Landslide!!

The top tier was only a little squished and one of the palm trees broke. I had to bring it home. No time to fix it before work. Thankfully the party was Saturday not Friday!

Friday night I came home and stuck it back together with some icing, scraped all the icing off the bottom tier and started over. It took just as long to fix it as it did to decorate it in the first place! Now I have to deliver it 15 miles - I hope it survives. I don't trust anyone else picking it up at this point.

Oops - the pictures posted in reverse.

What a terrible experience!!! I am so sorry that happened, but great save! I have learned to put a long down straight through all tiers of my stacked cakes (even the 2 tiered ones). You just never know.

Incredible save, you can't even tell the difference. Sorry you had to go through all that trauma, though.
