There was a post recently raving about Sugarveil, so I went to the website and checked it out. This stuff looks like a cake decorators dream, I would think that everyone would use it all the time, yet I don't see it that often. My question is, why don't people use it more often? Is there a glaring downside that I overlooked?

Although this is such a great tool, I think the number one downside to it is its price thumbsdown.gif

I agree the price is why I've never tried it. It looks like a great addition to any cakers life but the price is just crazy.

Agreed, the $200+ for the tool is a lot, but the sugarveil itself is only $15/bag which, accordig to the website, is enough for over 100 cakes. The owner herself said that the tool is not necessary. I think I'm going to order a bag, I've wasted $15 on less!

I agree with the price being to high. thumbsdown.gif To bad they are trying to make a fortune on a few when they could make 10 fortunes on many by lowering their prices to a reasonable level.
I would use it on every cake I make if it were cost effective.

I received one for my birthday and I like it, but I agree the price is too high.
I do like that I can use the tool with an attachment that comes with it for my dragees placement. You can use it with parchment bags and tips too so you really only need the icing. I bought the dvd when the owner had it on sale and it is really good for ideas and instructions. She also is very good with answering questions you email to her. I asked something and she answered back in less than 24 hours! Not too bad.

I was the one who raved about it recently. I agree- it is pricey- and I would not spring for the whole system- that's why I only got the icing. I can see how the rest of the system would be worth it, only if I knew I was going to put it to use A LOT- but I know I won't, so I did not do that. It's $15 for the bag of icing-and I contemplated even that purchase for a while- but it literally will last a very long time, as I only mixed up 1/2 C, and still had some left over. Maybe they would lower their prices if we all got together and asked them to??

The lettering in my opinion is awesome- with it I can do any font I would ever want...you can look at my beach balls and flip flops in my photos- they have initials on them that I used sugarveil for...

I want one so bad! My bday is coming up and I usually get a little cash from grandma icon_biggrin.gif so I thought I would use that plus a little I earned from teaching wilton to buy one. It would be my biggest cake purchase to date! After that I want an agbay!

I received the sugarveil kit from my husband for christmas this past year and I have yet to even try it .. its almost overwhelming to me but then again I tend to be scared to try new things ...I feel bad because I know how much it costs yet it just sits on a shelf in my laundry room completely unopened!

Can you do lettering and designs on cookies without the tool?

Do you just use a regular piping bag and do you get instructions with the icing?

Huh? How do you use it without their special tool? I thought it was pressurized somehow to help you....

I think it looks awesome. Did you all see what they did with it in American Cake Decorating???? They were using HOLE PUNCHES w/ it!!! Like those punches you can use for scrapbooking! (I don't do scrap booking, 'cause one expensive hobby is enough - but I do love looking at all the papers, stickers, hole punches, etc.).

it looks awesome. I'd love to know more about it. - I don't think I'd be wearing it though - like they have the "sugarveil bride" on their website.... hmm no thanks!

The tool uses pressure but you can make up the icing and use it with a regular piping bag or a parchment one too.
You just color it and spread it on wax paper with a spreader in a sheet and let it set up Then you can pull it off and use the hole punch or decorative scissors or even lace cutters to cutout your designs. It's really cool.

You certainly can use just a piping bag with the SugarVeil icing. In my opinion, it's the icing that the unique part of the system because of the way it "settles" into itself and stays flexible so that you can use in on curved areas. That's why it's so great for lettering and monogramming.

I like the "airpen" because it's so much easier on my hands, especially if I have a lot of piping to do. You can hold it like a pen and simply use your index finger to control the flow of icing. It takes some practice, but doesn't everything?

I think I remember someone on here that found an "airpen" system on Ebay. You might check that out.

Just be careful about the ones on ebay, I have seen some people trying to pass off similar "airpens" and saying for use with sugarveil when they have no affiliation with the company and who knows how well they work.

" You just color it and spread it on wax paper with a spreader in a sheet and let it set up Then you can pull it off and use the hole punch or decorative scissors or even lace cutters to cutout your designs. It's really cool."

So you could use a stencil, or whatever, and just lay it on top of the Sugarveil, and cut it out ? this sounds NEAT !

I have had the sugarveil for a couple of years and I used it to pipe out a volleyball net and attach it with lolly sticks. It worked but it sagged too much. I have only tried to use it as a volleyball net. I was impressed on the web site how they did the entire wedding gown out of sugarveil, that sold me, but what other uses are there and what is the gun thingy that everyone is talking about, I did not see it when I bought bag.

Does it ever break? I mean is it fragile if you do fine lines with it? I know someone said it can get fragile after it is completely dry, but I am wondering about it when it is still in the flexible stage.

Can you put royal icing in the pen?

How does the sugarveil actually stick to the cake? Do you have to apply some water or icing?
