Have a HOBBY(lol) biz and pass out biz cards. I am not sure if that is smart to do. Do you just word of mouth?

Thanks

I have an alternate business that has nothing to do with cakes... and when someone hears I do cakes... i hand them my other business card.

I hand out business cards that state that I do cakes. Just because you have a business card doesn't mean you're getting paid icon_lol.gif I also rely on word of mouth as well. As I always say, I have to do what I have to do!

I've gotten advice regarding business cards: only put a cell phone number and e-mail address. Don't put a home address (or any address)on it.

And just be careful. I've heard some stories...

what about getting a permit to make cakes out of your house in CA? Does this state not do that... I will be moving to San Fran at the end of the summer and really wanted to get set up making cakes out of my home. Any advice on CA policy?

Unfortunately, it is not legal to bake from home in California. Some locations will permit separate kitchens, but it depends on the zoning.

If you want to bake and sell legally, you have to work from a licensed commercial kitchen.

I just started a similar thread to this, oops! Well, if I can't bake out of my home can anyone tell me how you go about finding kitchen space to rent? Thanks!

California is pretty restrictive. You cannot have your home kitchen licensed, and you must work from a licensed kitchen to be legal. Many communities have zoning laws that prohibit you from building a separate kitchen for this purpose, too.

If you'd like to use a licensed kitchen:
- Look on Craig's List and on the internet. Search under many different terms and categories- they are a bit scattered.
- Find area bakeries, cookie shops, etc. that don't currently offer cakes and see if you can use or rent their space at times.
- Call around to local churches to see if they have a kitchen that they would allow you to use for a "donation," or if they allow rentals.

Hope this helps!

I have business cards that I just made for fun but I do give them to friends of family... I live in Ca and bake in my own kitchen but my aunt owns a French restaurant and said if I ever wanted I could use her kitchen so that was very cool and nice of her.
