What Can I Substitute Buttermilk For?

Don't have any buttermilk. Need to bake a chocolate cake now. What can I substitute? thanks.

I found your post in the unanswered post area, I started checking this part of the website recently.

I have the same problem, I have this great substitute recipe for buttermilk.

1 cup milk and 1 tbsp lemon juice. Just mix and let sit about 5-10 minutes.

You could also use vinegar instead of the lemon juice. But I prefer the taste of the lemon in the recipes.

You can sub sour cream too.. the same amount. icon_smile.gif

Or you could use any coffee creamer or just heavy cream...

Just plain old heavy cream? What about the acidity that buttermilk has? I have heard of a lot of things, but never just heavy cream.. you learn something new all the time!

For some scratch recipes you do need the acidity not just the moisture.
