Is it possible to make an icecream cake using one of the moulds like the sports ball or is that an impossible feat? My husband isn't a huge fan of cake...he'll eat one piece maybe but thats it...he prefers icecream cake. Would it be possible to make something like this using one of the moulds, or would it be easier just to go to Dairy Queen and get a plain icecream cake with nothing on it and then decorate it using the sports ball (I want to make a golf ball for him for Fathers Day)...but I want something he's going to eat.

Is this possible...if it is, are there things I should know like how to get the icecream out of the mould etc...

Just wondering
TIA

My guess would be yes, it would be possible. Just line the mold with aluminum foil with the edges sticking out a few inches, before you put the ice cream in it. Freeze solid and then let it set out a few minutes and you should be able to lift it out of the mold. I have never done this with the sports ball mold but I have done it with various desserts in loaf pans or sheet cake pans.

Good luck. Maybe someone else has better advice that has done it before.

I wouldnt advise it, if you do it will be almost impossible to ice it, especially if you want to make it look like anything recognizable, it would be very difficult. Good luck! if you do decide to try it, dip the pan in very hot water for like 2 seconds to make it easier to get out of the pan

I don't see why you couldn't do this. I always make my ice cream cakes by using the cake pan I made the cake in....

This would work just fine. I would make sure to line the pan with plastic wrap. Once you soften the icecream a little scoop it in to the ball. If you are going to layer it with cake you can always cut the prebaked cake to the size of the bottom of the ball and layer it. What are you planning on using as frosting. I love the frosting on DQ's cakes and have always wondered if it is just plain old frozen butter cream? Any ideas on what they use?
Good luck

I made an ice cream cake not too long ago, using a sports ball, just baked the 2 parts of the mold with cake (not too full), unmold, let it cool down, lined the pans with plastic wrap and layer cake - ice cream - cake on each side and put on the freezer for a ouple of hours. them unmold and sadwich both sides with more icream and freeze por another hour unmold, then just ice with cool wip frosting (did it in 3 stages, puting the cake back to fridge to keep the ice cream hard.
hope helps!

First of all I work with ice cream cakes all the time. If you order a plain cake from Dairy Queen they charge you the same decorated, or not decorated. They use Bettercreme, a commerical icing.
Now you can make your own in the mold, but do not but aluimin foil or plastic wrap in the mold first. Just put the ice cream in it haf full, put your crushed oreos, or what ever you want in the middle, and put the rest of the ice on top, level it off and freeze it hard. The lower it into tap water for a minute or two and flip it on you board and refreeze it. Then take ice cream in a bowel and mix it till it is soft and smooth and ice your cake with the soft ice cream. You have to work fast with this "icing" to make it smooth and refreeze it again. Good Luck! and enjoy
