I'm the dummy who left the lens cap on while taking pics of this cake!! This was for my son's 6th birthday, and luckily one of the dad's there took a pic on his cell phone and e mailed it to me....thank goodness! I was up till 2:30 a.m. working on it.
It's covered in MMF, and I also used a little leftover wilton fondant for the spikes. I have trouble getting my MMF to harden for things like that. I also used gumpaste for the teeth and wings. My first set of wings was to thick and they broke when I was messing with them, so this is my 2nd pair. It was really rainy so they didn't dry and I couldn't stick them into the cake like I wanted.
Thanks for looking!

bet you had one happy birthday boy! ![]()
lol- that's cute about the lens cap, I've done the same thing before.
Thanks everyone!! Yes it's all cake. I have a small board underneath the top of the mouth to support it open. I had my hubby do the wood cutting for me![]()
My son was very happy!...although when I was first starting to put it together he said -"NO! I want it to be a standing up dragon!!" I did a standing up dino for his last birthday so I didn't want it to be too similar. He was ok with it after he saw it though. It's funny how strong of an opinion they can have at that age(6)!

So how did you support the open mouth, I cant see the board at all? How many did you feed with that cake? It looks so big. Which pans, how did you carve, please post instructions if possible and most of all, how long did you need from start to finish???
The cake is awesome
That is ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!!!
I am sure you and all of us are grateful to the person with the cell-phone... Thanks to him we got a glimpse of your wonderful cake.
One question, did you have a picture/model to guide you, or was it just your creativity coming through?
Thanks for sharing,
Karen
To support the mouth open I had my hubby cut a small board and then two small triangles from wood. Then I used the triangles as a wedge to hold the mouth support open. I wood glued them down to the big board. Then when I was sculpting the cake I tried to blend it as best I could so the support would be hidden. I covered it with fondant and folded the edges under so you couldn't see the support board.
It wasn't really THAT big, it's made from all round pans 2" to 5" sizes and they are all laid on their sides with a small bit cut off to make them lay flat. I shaved off edges where necessary. I cut rectangular pieces for the head, did some sculpting to shape. I used scraps for the back legs and fondant for the front legs. The wings I attached with royal icing. They were supposed to be stuck in the cake but weren't dry enough.
It took me about 13 hours, including baking and making icings. I do all my work at night b/c I have three kids.
I looked at lots of different dragon pics, and came up with the design on my own.
