I have never made a stacked cake before, but a family friend asked me if I could make a tie dyed cake for her groovy/hippie themed wedding.
I "tie dyed" the batter, but it was all vanilla flavored with a grand marnier syrup.
I also made a Groom's cake for the guitar playing groom, which was devil's food with a cherry filling.
Both were frosted with buttercream.
Also thanks for all the ladies on this website - I got a lot of great info from here before I embarked on this adventure!
Wow! Great coloring! You hit the theme great! (And I'm one of the few on here who was actually ALIVE AND AROUND during the 60's dye tie era!) ![]()

The groom's cake is great .... I love the stair-step effect on the sides.
I think I can safely say that "we" are looking forward to seeing more from you! ![]()
I just picked two colors per layer and halved the batter for each layer, then used food coloring gel to color them and spread them in the pan in layers. They did actually mix and run into each other a fair amount, but it looked nice that way.
If you do this, I suggest using the gels and not the food color drops because they changed the consistency of the batter. Here is a picture of my first test of the batter, when I used drops.
(Note: this is also a different type of frosting and dye that I tried but didn't like.)
I also made tie dyed guitars but decided not to use them because I thought they were "too much."
