..........two days ago a guy sends me message through my myspace page and asks about a cake. He wanted to know where my bakery was and how soon he could get a cake. I informed him that I just make cakes to pay my tuition.........that unfortunately I didn't have a bakery. He replied that he was an M.D. that corresponds with the Health Dept. but that he would pretend he didn't read that and proceded to ask about a tinkerbell cake to feed 250 PEOPLE!!! YIKES!!! I went into panic mode.......of course. I called my SIL since she's worked at every hospital around here to confirm his job which it was confirmed. I told her that I would deny the order since I was shakin in my britches......(with good reason.........I know I've heard it a million times that we must be licensed........I know and you all are very right). She said that she would pay for me to open my own shop (she makes good $$$) if I wanted so I wouldn't have to go through this again. My dilema is that I'm going to school for Dental Hygiene and don't want to get sidetracked. She said that it wouldn't be a shop that's open all day. It would only be there for me when I have orders....................hmmmmmmmmmmmm........sounds good to me. I have no idea where to start or if I should even be considering it. What would you do???? The only reason I've been able to afford college is from selling my cakes. Please help to guide me through this.
Thank you so much in advance,
Cyndi
Dont get off track with your education. I went to a university that specializes in dentistry and dental hy. and once you get out on the job market you should make good money if you can find a full time job. youve got penty of time to open a bakery later. and if you find you dont like dental hy. after working in the field you can always fall back on baking.
If you do open a bakery, you are most likely going to see your schoolwork suffer. If you think you want to become a bakery owner full time, go for it, but it doesn't make sense to set up a shop just for once in a while orders... now... if your sis wants to extend that offer to others... hehehe!! But maybe she'd be willing to help you rent a kitchen when you have jobs... you know, not your own whole shop, but a licensed kitchen where you can be totally above board and legal, you know? Good luck!
Keep on studying... once you have that no-one can take it away.
Your cakes will also always be there.
There will be lots of time and options in your future to open a bakery or legal kitchen. Ask your sister if maybe she will extend the offer for once you are working nomal 9-5 hours instead of in school and studying and making cakes which is almost like 2 1/2 full times jobs if you ask me. I remember college, classes, labs, job, Study. Get up at 5:30 am and go until 2am and start over again!
Keep your focus. That is an accomplishment you will always cherish. Even if you end up making cakes for a living later in life, you will always have dentistry to fall back on. Not a bad back up plan IMHO.
Who know maybe once you are done with school and you have a job, with some help from your sis, you can get yourself a legal kitchen and use it.
Good Luck.
Cyndi,
The first impression I got from this guy is this:
I have something on this girl so I would liek to get a cake for cheap maybe even free. What will or can she say since she has no license?
Do you understand what I'm getting at?
Yes, this was my first thought! What's he going to want in return for keeping his mouth shut ![]()
?! Then again, if you refuse his order, what's to say he won't tattle anyway out of spite?! I don't envy you on this one!
Personally, I'd ignore the guy and act as if he'd never contacted me. And this guy is a real doctor? Must be pretty low class whatever he is if he'd try intimidating a young woman like that to get a free cake. Don't want to scare you but I wouldn't trust him in any way. Who know what else he might be up to.
I think a lot of people don't really care if you are doing cakes full time in a bakery or just part time in your home. He knows you bake at home and sounds like he has no problems with it. I would go ahead and bake him a cake.
If he wanted to turn you in he would have. I doubt he is going to buy a cake and eat it then turn you in.
I think it would be foolish to spend your sisters money for a bakery that is only open when you need to do a cake. If she is willing to do I would just find a kitchen to rent. Much cheeper.
