Since so many of you are using digital cameras to photograph your cakes, I thought you'd be a good resource for advice on a new camera. I know I need one to share cake photos, but I don't know what to look for. Any advice?
we have a canon zoombrowser ex and love it, but there are others we like more, but it was too late once we spent the money on this one....... hope you get better answers!
I would get one with at least 5 mega pixels. My camera has 3.2 and it also does not have a real zoom lense. If I had it to do over again, I would get more mega pixels and make sure it had a zoom lense. The more mega pixels the sharper your photos will be especially when enlarged.
Thanks for the suggestions. Can't wait to join you all in posting pictures.
I would suggest the sony DSC H1 or H2 cyber shot... Best purchase I have made in cameras.. We own a candle company as well and this camera does AMAZING on those shots! Its great outdoors and in... I love the fact you can shoot video with it to... Best buy and Staples had the best price on them..... Just an FYI
I have a Sony Cybershot and think it's the greatest. It is a 4.1 megapxel and it has a smart zoom feature. I used to have a HP camera with no zoom. I really recommend a camera with a zoom feature, very handy! Also about the whole mega pixle issue, I get so annoyed because you buy a camera and then next week there will be one out with more features and it shoots better pictures and so on!! Oh and another tip try to get one with rechargable batteries{Or just buy some}. The Cybershot comes with the batteries and a charger which is fantastic, my other didn't.
I have the sony Cyber-shot DSC-N1 with 8.1 megapixels. It is their newest cyber-shot out and I love it. It is about 2.5" x 4" and about 3/4" thick. There were two different cameras that came out right around the time that we bought this one and they didn't have as high of mega pixels or as good with night shots.
It has a 3" viewable touch screen. The only thing i don't care of is that it doesnt' have a view finder b/c of the large screen, but that is just a personal preference, it doesn't bother my BF at all ![]()
It has a rechargble lithiom-ion battery, which we prefer b/c we haven't had good luck with the rechargable AA batteries-for us they wear out a lot faster. It also has some great accesories for us when traveling. We love it.
I would suggest though if you find a camera you like, before you buy it do some research online and read some customer reveiws of the pluses and minuses (all camera's have them) and see if it will do what you want it to do. We usually look on amazon, but you can google and find some more reviews on the product =)

Is this software for Canon cameras?

First of all decide what you will be using your camera for. With all the various features out there you don't really need to spend money of features your don't need.
As was suggested 5 MP is great for the average amateur photographer. Unless you are going to be making billboard sized photos or you are a professional photographer you really don't need any more MP than that. You can get some pretty darn large prints with a 5 MP and the resolution is excellent.
With regards to a camera with zoom features. Optical zoom is more important than digital zoom. And let me clarify what I mean by that. Digital zooming enlarges a portion of the photo and crops the rest of it. Therefore simulating optical zooming. The downside to this is, you have now lost a portion of your shot. You can achieve the same result with optical zoom and digital editing software. So when getting a camera lean towards the optical zoom. Also you will see total zoom which is optical zoom x digital zoom. (For instance, my camera has 10 x optical zoom and 5 x digital for a total of 50 x zoom capability). Always try to find out what the optical zoom is. 3 x optical zoom is pretty standard for most compact cameras.
Macro Mode is important for taking close ups.
Anyway, bottom line is before you go out and drop money on a camera do some research. Find a camera that's best suited to YOUR needs. When I was about to buy my camera i asked my best friend for some advice on which camera to buy. I had several in mind at the point. He ended up suggested some high end camera that I probably would never use to its fullest potential. (LOL I think he was hoping i would get fed up and give it to him). He did also suggest one valuable tool. That was a a website that allowed me to do side by side comparisons with various cameras. Here is the site.

Good luck with your decision.
