touch!!! Ok, I was never that great to begin w/ and have never been 100% satisfied w/ a cake that I've done. But it was at least ok. However, for my past 2 orders it has been a completely mess. I mean, it looks so nasty that I just want to chunk it into the trash. It's soo ugly that I don't even want to continue working on it anymore, and if I knew there was another cake for them to use I wouldn't give mine to them....*sigh* what to do, what to do?
So ladies, how do I get my *mojo* back...??? I'm desperate, I have my first groom's cake for a wedding next weekend to do and now I don't have the confidence to do it anymore... Help!!!
Everyone has an off day no matter what they do! Just watch "Ace of Cakes" they have horrible disasters. I've been know to completely scrape all the icing off a cake and re-decorate at 2:00 in the morning. You'll get through this and learn something from the experience.
Well I took a look at your cakes and I think they are fine! But I do know what you are talking about.
I never like my cakes either. I look at them and see nothing but a mess. However, I have learned that others see nothing but the overall picture and really like them. SO I've tried to stop putting my cakes down.
I figure no matter what I'm sure I do better cakes then the person the cake is for.
If you want a pick up go look at the cakes at Costco or the grocery store and you will see how bad they do cakes yet everyone things they are so nice.
I also like the idea of watching Ace of Cakes. What I really picked up on from that show is Duff is always saying how great the cakes are. If you the decorator are excited and over joyed to deliver the cakes then others will be too. Try it.
We all have are things we are best at. Some are fondant pros, some are buttercream flowers or getting it perfectly smooth. Others are great at figures or gumpaste. Find what your best at and use that on your cakes.
Also, to get back into loving this take a class. Nothing picks you up like a class and being around other cake people.
Good luck. Don't be so hard on yourself. Your work is better then you think it is.
I don't think you've lost your MOJO!!
You are crazy! I have never made a cake with a head on it! That is soo cool! and I bet your son loved it!
For your art deco cake...GREAT JOB! I am pretty creative and I haven't come up with a design like that. If you would like some help I think you could put the same border on the bottom of the first tier and then add some flowers to the top! That is a wonderful design and beautifully painted!
What you need to do is take a walk! Take a day off! Are you near a lake or a favorite place you like to go?? Sometimes we just get cabin fever and we need the art of nature to inspire us!
That is what I do! You need to keep with it! I think that you have set your cake designs at such a high level that maybe you think you are going backwards? Your Blue's Clues tired cake is wonderful! I do this also.
Keep with it! ![]()
I sent on the couch, watch Judge Judy and eat chocolate.
You too? LOL This is too funny!
I walk away! I was having trouble a couple of months ago doing a friend's child's birthday cake. I was FREAKIN' OUT!! So, I put all my stuff away (I was working in the church kitchen and it was 9:00 PM and rainy out) and went home; took a bath; drank some hot tea and went to bed. Got up the next day and started fresh. The cake came together in less than an hour!

Ohhhh....((((((((((big hug)))))))))))))
don't give up. We all go through a slump every once in a while. I'm constantly saying, "This is the last cake I'm ever doing!" The cake may not meet my expectations but as soon as I hear all the nice comments and see the happy faces, it starts all over.
Heck, even star quarterbacks drop the ball sometimes.
I really hate bad cake days. Because I love decorating so much! I think that's the hardest thing- feeling disappointed with what we love so much.
I don't even post my bad cakes on this site. That's the one consolation- once the cake is eaten or delivered, I don't have to look at it again! ![]()
Everyone else is right! Take some time to get inspired. Whether you can take a 30 mintue walk, or a whole day off, or take a class or just sit and relax.
Your cakes are wonderful, and I admire you for trying some really complicated and artistic things!
I've had that kind of week also. I had 80 logo cookies drying on the table and some one sat something on top of the foil I had over them, and pulled the logo off about 20 of them. Next cake, was going to be a teapot, turned into a sheet cake that is buldging. I can't wait to see what the next 2 I have to do this weekend look like!! ![]()

Holy Cow! No wonder you thought your last two cakes were whompy. I just saw your photo gallery and everything looks so perfect! Of course after you make THOSE kinds of cakes it is hard to come down to a normal level.
Edited to say: And you have pretty handwriting too!
You have a ton of talent! Just take a deep breather and it will all be ok. Keep on chugging through! You are fantastic!
You know, I do the same thing. I'm rarely ever satisfied with my work. However, I have noticed that if I'm excited about a cake, I do better & feel better than if it's one I've dreaded & I'm not excited about doing.
Keep up the good work! Just take a weekend break & start again on Monday!
