First Disaster: Over And Moving On...
Decorating By Sunflowerbagel Updated 18 Apr 2007 , 5:12pm by nokddng
This was my first cake disaster. It's 8 and 6 inch tiers, but I decided to assemble before decorating them (because it was Whimsical BC and so soft). My 6 inch slid right off my fingers and into my apron. It was a white cake with fresh raspberry filling. It was demolished. I had to rush to pull something together and ended up with only a few minutes to decorate the entire cake. I just did some swirly doo-dads all around the cake. I'm thankful she didn't have a specific design in mind -- only to match the purple, pink, white cupcake theme for the birthday.
The cookies are little cupcakes that matched the theme - for giveaways.
I've never stacked a cake with Whimsical BC before (or any non-crusting, soft, whipped type frosting). Does anyone have any suggestions? I prefer to decorate my cakes and then stack. This was a first.
Thanks!!
I have never heard of Whimsical buttercream either. What is it? Your cake and cookies are adorable. I don't think I would be calling that a disaster.
Whimsical BC is a recipe I got from here. This particular lady LOVES the stuff, as I've iced her cakes with it previously. This was the first tiered cake for her. It's a fluffy, yummy BC. It was hard for me to not have finger marks when stacking with it. Little did I know that would be the least of my problems. I had the entire cake decorated with colored stripes all over it and polka dots. Whimsical is so soft it can just slide around ![]()

Whimsical Bake House Buttercream
In Mixer bowl, stir together:
6 Cups Confectioners' Sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
Using whip attachment, add and whip on low speed:
1 cup boiling water (3/4 cup on hot days)
Whip until smooth and is cool.
Add and whip until smooth again:
2 3/4 cup Hi-Ratio or regular vegetable shortening
6 ounces (1 1/2 sticks) butter; slightly chilled and cut into 1" pieces
Turn up mixer to medium-high. Whip until double in volume and is light and fluffy. About 10-20 minutes. Recipe will almost fill a 5-quart mixer bowl when done.
Makes 9 1/2 cups
You can pipe it. It's just fluffy. That's why I could only think of fluffy swirly things. There are a number of people at CC who use the stuff and their cakes look great! I prefer smoothing regular BC. I usually put it under my fondant or RBC... or if I do water.
I know it's not what you set out for, but end result looks great and I bet the b-day girl Loved it. ![]()
beautiful are those cookies on the table? The cake looks awesome for a disaster what a smart girl you are!
Even though it's not what you set out to do, the cake came out cute!
