Today I approached my daughter's ballet teacher with an idea I have been thinking about since last November.
Every first Saturday night inDecember, the ballet school put on their end of year concert and usually at the end of the performance, Theresa (ballet teacher) gives out the following :
- a carnation to each of the little kids - about 80 of them
- roses to the senior students - about 40 of them
- a small bouquet of flowers for the mum that help backstage and help dress the kids - about 10 bouquets.

Well, today I approached her and because we are good friends I felt confortable in asking her how much she spends on flowers each year. She said she spends between $500 - $600 on flowers. icon_eek.gificon_eek.gif

So I proposed cookie favours and cookie bouquets instead. She has tasted my cookies and loves them.
- ballet shoe cookies and a little rectangle decorated to look like the stage with curtains and a star in the middle for the little kids (160 cookies)
- 3 cookies each for the senior students put into pretty containers and tied with ribbon (120 cookies)
- small cookie bouquets with 3 to 4 cookies for the mums (40 - 50 cookies)

I had done a rough pricing and estimated that everything would cost about $120.00.

I told her that if she paid for everything, I would charge $250.00 to do everything. Told her to think about it and let me know what she decides.

Do you think that is reasonable?

My selling points to her were -
- she would be saving money
- she would not have to go out to buy the flowers and tie each one individually with ribbon
- she would be less pressured in the lead up to the concert.

Wish me luck!!!

Great idea! Are you planning on putting stickers on the backsides of the cookies, too? Great advertising!

Ummm, so she'd buy the ingredients and give $250 on top of that ($370 total)? BARGAIN OF THE CENTURY! 330 decorated cookies for $370 ($1.12 each cookie!) - doing it for that you are a sweetheart. If it's $250 for everything (75ct per cookie), well then, forgive me, I think you're crazy! Even at $1.12 per cookie, I think you are taking on an enormous amount of work for very little money - friend or no friend!

I think that is a spendid idea, good for you for talking to her.

I think the ideas for all the different cookies types of cookies, sound great. Just a quick questions, did you consider the cost of the packaging of all those cookies, I always get caught up on that one!

Good Luck.

As I think it is a wonderful idea, I have to agree with bonjovibabe. I think you are undercharging for your creativity and work. icon_biggrin.gif

She will pay for the ingredients, containers, cello paper, etc and pay me $250.00 on top of that. I know it is a little low but the cookies will be simply decorated and I will be putting my name on the tags so it is a way to get my name out there.

You are probably correct that it is a crazy thing to do for that price and I may well be crazy by the end of it but I hope she says yes.

I think that is great, it's cheaper than adverstising!

And you practice as you go. You can charge her more next time once you figure out how long it will take you.
Good luck.

I think that is a great idea - especially because you are getting $250 on top of the cost of your supplies. Otherwise, you really would have been undercharging! Hope it works out for you - I think this is a GREAT way to get your name out there. Think of all the parents who will see your name and use your cookies for parties, gifts, etc.
