Almost A Disaster..turned Out Good!!

Hi Everyone,
Well I have been asking lots of questions about the cake I wanted to make..I planned and planned. It was the cross cake from the Wilton 2000 year book. I planned on putting it on a sheetcake.Covering both with fondant..I did a practice cake with the cross cake, the fondant went on sooo easy!!! I thought it was going to be easy to do the real cake..WRONG!!!
So I crumb coat the cakes and ice the sheetcake, I figured it would be harder than the cross, but not as hard as it was..I copuld not get the fondant to roll out and go on..It took me like 2 hours to get it on.I almost started to cry..The fondant was dry, so I tried everything, and I didn't have enough space to roll it out and have the cake close enough to get it on..I knew if I could just get it on I could cover any mistakes..FINALLY I got it on, but it looked like a mess..I kept looking at it and I was sooo disapointed!!
I really thought about scraping the whole thing, and doing something else, but I wanted to make this cake so bad..( For my son's Christening tomorrow) I put so much time into it, so I took a deep breath and figured I could make do..I just wanted to get the cross covererd, so I rolled out the fondant, and got it on..Then a little while later I relized I only crumb coated the cross, I never iced it...I figured who cares at this point I was almost ready to hurt someone...I thought about having a drink, but it was only like 9am...Well, all in all I think the cake came out great!! Here's a link to see pictures ( I don't know how to resize, and my brain isn't working now) and some centerpieces I made with cross cookies and image cookies using a picure of my son's face!! www.cakepics.shutterfly.com just click on it and then click view pictures..Sorry this is so long, but I sure some of you can relate!!
Thanks again to all of you who helped me!!!!

Too Funny.....I feel like you watched me make mine. I felt the SAME way. I often fell like just dumping a cake and picking one up at the supermarket. But I always get soooo determined I just get through it. Like I had said I think your cake came out AWESOME. Great job. Just think now people will be asking YOU for advise after they see your pic! ![]()

Your cake is really beautiful!! I love the presentation of your cookies, too! Job well done. ![]()
You did a great job on everything, you should be proud! I have to tell you that is one of the cutest babies I've ever seen! ![]()
IN the end, all that matters is that gorgeous cake of yours turned out BEAUTIFUL!!! ![]()
And yes, the same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I made my first fondant wedding cake. On the middle tier, I had just finished covering it with fondant and set it aside. I was preparing the bottom tier for icing, when I looked over and saw a red hole tearing through the fondant of the cake I had just finished.
The berry filling had burst the dam and bled through to the outside!
My first instinct was to PANIC! But I remembered my cake teacher told me ," the wonderful thing about decorating cakes is that if you make a mistake, just scrape it all off and start again."
And so I did. Filling and all. Second time was a charm. ![]()
And on the bottom tier, my fondant became so dry it began to tear every time I tried to transfer it to the cake.
My husband asked me to put it aside for a few minutes, and come back to it.
First I kneaded about 1 Tablespoon of White Karo Syrup into it, covered it, ate dinner and came back. It worked perfectly after that. I don't know why I tried the syrup, but it worked. The fondant became more silky and managable. ![]()
Like I said, the end result is all that matters. Here is a pic of how my near disasters turned out. ![]()

Thanks everyone for all the nice comments!! I couldn't wait to put the pictures on here!! No one knows what it feels like to be finished, especially when things weren't going so good, like everyone here does. I love this site, and without everyones help, it would not have turned out so good!! Thanks for saying the baby is cute, he is so big!! I love those cookies, and I can't wait until the party!!
