Just wanted to share with any of you an experience I just had this weekend. Had a bride to be that was coming to select her wedding cake. She, her Grandmother and Mother all came.....going through my portfolio of cakes.....they even did a taste test of a cake I had on hand. Everything went well....the bride was excited, picking out her colors, flowers, etc......her mother walks to the main door to my cake decorating area.....and says, "Wow, bet you are glad you have this nice kitchen to do all you cakes out of?" And I was getting them some napkins for their slice of cake....and I said back...."Yes, and I'm glad I am set up legal with the Health Dept. too." As I came around the corner with their samples of cake....the BRIDE TO BE SAYS..."I'm one of the new Health Inspector's in the county. I just started a month ago." She then smiled and said...."Glad to know you are legal too....cause I want you to for sure make my wedding cake!" We all laughed....but I was thinking to myself...what if I had not been legal....YIKES, I would have been busted! Just had to share with everyone....that you just NEVER KNOW!

You just never know do ya! Thanks for sharing....I'm glad I don't have to worry about that yet in Ohio....licensing isn't required for in-home businesses (yet)!

cambo....that is good that you don't have to worry. I think there are a few other states that aren't as strict on home kitchens. Many are though and this was one of those situations where it kind of caught me off guard....but then I was glad because I knew I was legally set up. And that's right....YOU NEVER KNOW!!! LOL!

Isn't it nice to be legal....

But then you can have an experience like mine, where you are legal, a health inspector for the state is tasting your cakes for their taste test and decides to go with the cheaper (unlicensed, illegal) cake decorator.....

You just never know about people....

But I am glad that you are legal and it worked out to your advantage. I wonder if she is going around to all the cake decorators?

LOL no way!!!!!!!

In PA, as long as you just serve nonperishable bakery items, you don't answer to the health department. Only the Dept of Agriculture. You would just have to be sure if a Health inspector came for a tasting you didn't serve your cake with anything made out of dairy!

Minnesota it is the Dept of Agriculture too. But yep, health inspector for the state turned their head, took off their work gloves and went to the other person.
