What Do You Think About My First Castle Cake?

I wanted to share the picture of my daughter's birthday cake and cookies. This was my first castle cake and I was pleased with the way it turned out. I am not one that does cakes often, so I am slower at decorating.

This is a buttercream with royal flowers. I baked cake inside the bottom ice cream cones, which were used to make the towers. The sugar cones are covered in melted chocolate and sprinkles.

I did have a couple of problems. Crumbs were awful even with the crumb coat. Also, when I started icing the top layer, the skin (or what I call it) started coming off the cake, exposing the the white part. The icing did not want to stick to that part. Had a terrible time with that.

A big thank you to Sue_dye, Marcimang and Cambo! Their directions and willingness to help made the job easier.

Your opinions are welcomed!

Thanks!

First of all, I think you did a really great job! I agree with the others, it's hard to believe you don't decorate much!

As far as the crumbs go, have you tried using the big icer tip? That thing has been such a lifesaver for me! I used to have tons of crumbs in my icing when I just used a spatula to put my icing on, but that icer tip has completely eliminated the crumbs for me!

Great Job!! Very well done!
As for the icing pulling up the "skin", it might have been too thick. Try thinning it out a little more and it should go on a little easier.

Fantastic job!! I love the ice cream cone look. The colors are fantastic! About the icing, have you every tried a small amount of clear karo syrup? My friend told me about this, and it helps it to glide on. Also, I heard on this site that some people use a drop of vinegar. I have not tried that, so I don't know. icon_smile.gif I love your cake though. I don't know what I would charge, because I tend to make cake for people that I love.

No idea about pricing, but WOW I love this cake! It is adorable!

Laura102777 is right about the icer tip - it was a lifesaver to me too!!! You do use a lot of icing when you use it, but who cares! It made my life a lot easier.
