I'm helping my grandchildrens' class do a cake-like thing for a cake auction at their school (35 1st - 4th graders).

We've agreed on a solar system made out of cupcakes against a black foam-board background: a 6" single layer for the sun, regular sized cupcakes for the planets, and mini-cupcakes for stars around the edges.

Does anyone have any ideas for making all this do-able and fun for the kids, while at the same time making it actually look like the solar system?

I'm imaginging globby cake masses set around a smudged royal-icing spiral.

I would prefer to end up with something they call all be proud of.

And ideas??????

It sounds like a cool idea. Not sure how I would put it all together. Something to ponder...But what a cool concept! Can't wait to see the finished pic! Good luck. thumbs_up.gif

There's a cupcake solar system in the book The Artful Cupcake. I got it at Barnes and Noble.
