OK, I went to color my b/c frosting with the Wilton Red (no taste) and it kept coming out looking pink. What's up with that? I kept adding and kept getting pink (and to think it's for a wrestling team!!!!). I somehow don't think pink will fly with them. Am I doing something wrong, do I keep adding until it is red? How much is too much??? Awhhhh! Help. icon_cry.gif

It is very difficult to get true red. It is easier with Americolors, but since you have the Wilton one, you just have to add more. If you can get by with less Red icing, take a smaller portion and add more color.

It will darken if you allow some time.

It takes a ton of wilton no taste red to get red. It will deepen as it sets and if you are using crusting buttercream deepens even more as it crusts. If you look in my pics at my elmo cake he turned out pretty red. When I was piping it had a dark pinkish red tinge if that makes sense. Try letting it set a while and also put a dab on a piece of wax paper or something so you can get an idea of the color once it sets up.

I'm also trying to get red... it's funny I was coming on line to post the same question. I had a small amount of gum paste/mmf mix... I put in a ton of red and ended up with an orangish red... Need help. Do they make ready made red gumpaste?

Thank you!

I add a bit of cocoa to my icing or fondant. I think the brown helps give the red a good base.

I made my first batch of MMF for a lion cake which needed red and orange. I was a bit worried because of all the posts I have seen about problems with red mmf. I remembered for bc I was told it was easier to start with pink and then make it red, so I used the orange first and then added red coloring to the extra orange and it came out great. It was a bright red, not a deep one but I think starting with the orange helped. Pink would probably be an even better base.

My teachers have told me if you want a truer red buttercream or royal icing start by adding some dark pink. Once you there, start adding red. It works everytime for my red. You can check out some of my pictures.

I have never used fondant that way, but I have often made marzipan and it takes alot of red since you start with a beigy yellow base. But eventually you get red.

Good luck.

I always add a little red kool-aid to help the red taste better.... does help a little with the coloring....
