Everything i've read says to use plates two inches larger than the top cake when using this method. Would it actually hurt to use a plate that's one inch larger than the top cake?

My border will be a simple shell and with cakes shrinking some I don't want a large plastic edge showing below the cake. The cake will be a 3 tier 8", 11" and 14" cake with fresh flowers between the tiers. Should I use 10" & 13" plates or can I use 9" & 12" plates? Which do you think would look better?

Thanks!
Debbie

An inch larger than the cake is enough, especially with a small border. So a 9' plate for an 8' cake should be fine. that is normally what I use.

The bigger the plates, the larger the shadow cast on the lower cakes. My opinion is the smaller ones.

Thank you! That's what I was thinking. I wasn't sure if the reason for using the larger plates was something structural or not.
