there are so many petty arguements, and tiffs that it makes me sick.

i loved this site more than the world for the first few months i was on here. if i had a question, i had it answered, if i needed inspiration to keep practicing, i got it...now i feel incredibly different..i feel like i am in high school and there are a few really talented jocks that scare everyone else and people kiss their butts and are afraid of them..

i have been bullied into basically taking one of my pictures off the site because it was made into such a big deal that i couldnt even stand to look at it anymore. is that fair? if i SERIOUSLY, unintintionally forgot to "give credit where it is due" should i be ratted out by another member and bullied?? i think it is incredibly unfair.

cake decorating has been around forever! people have done everything (not really, but darn close)..there are cakes on this site that people have no idea that they have made a copy of (like fingind nemo cakes...) ...and there are people on here that are so talented that you might want to copy their idea, just for yourself, just to see if you could duplicate their MASTERPIECE! cant people understand it? maybe im just in over my head.

i understand if you are a wedding dress maker and you make an exact replica of a vera wang dress and go on ACCESS HOLLYWOOD and try to say that it is your own..that is not fair..but people make exact replicas all the time...its a whole different industry..it will never touch hers though...you have to deal with it i think..

i dont think its okay to copy something and pass it off as your own, but is it really such a BIG ordeal if its a petty cake that you dont even make money off of? i understand both sides of the arguement, but its just a silly website gallery,...its not like you are on national television claiming it...so why cant people just get over themselves? i dont know...

it just really upsets me because one of my only passions in life is cake decorating.. and i feel like it is tarnished because this is the most helpful website i have found..BUT if you ask the wrong question or post the wrong thing.. you get chastised.. i just wish everyone would bite their toungs a bit..and suck up your pride, let things go, and remember that we are ALL on here for the same reasons..and just stick to that..and not all this other stuff..

I absolutely agree Katleg. Young and old, new and experienced...each of us are on here to learn. Let's not berate each other in any way and just enjoy this site as a common place for us all to share with one another what we love to do.

It's really gotten to the breaking point, so let's wipe the slate clean around here and start again.

This site and the info are all too good to lose any Member over, so let's all forget the past and move on. icon_smile.gif

I'm in total agreement with you....especially when it comes to people getting all bent out of shape for not getting credit. Instead of attacking someone publicly and making a big production out of it, wouldn't it be better (and more mature) just to pm the person who may have not acknowledged copying someone else's work (and maybe they just forgot when they were uploading the pics) to give them a fair chance to correct their mistake instead of making a witch hunt out of it!!

And...if you are that possessive about your work, DON'T POST YOUR PICS, for goodness sake!! This is a public forum!! Not your personal website!!

Also, I thought imitation was the best form of flattery!

I too, miss the likes of Squirrely, PastryDiva, blittle6, and others....all people with immense talent sharing with people like me (I just started last summer!)....I'm not interested in arguing differences in philosophy, culture, ethics, etc...that's for other forums...I just want to know ALL ABOUT CAKES (and decorating!!).

I have not been a member on this site for long and really have no idea what is going on. So far this has been a really helpful site and I have appreciated all the wonderful tips I have gotten but now i'm almost afraid to post anything if it's going to start an argument. I totally agree with Katleg on everything she said. This site should be a place to share your wonderful masterpieces. Not a place to bicker and fight over who made what first. Please forgive a newbie for butting in but I just had to post.

I'm sorry...but I have to say this..........

that cat with that green helmet on and sagging whiskers cracks me up!!!!!!!!!!! I laugh out loud EVERY time I see a post from you!!!!!

I don't see how anyone can get pissy with that cat in the post!!!! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Honestly though....I have only seena few rude comments and to me it seems to always be from this one poster....I miss all the arguements icon_confused.gif , but if things are that tense and there are that many snippity topics....I'm afraid then that this one may take a horribly negative turn fast .....be careful .........and you have my support "all just laugh at the cat"!!!!

i completely agree as well guys!
it's one thing to steel a pic and claim it as your own, but if you post your pic on here and someone else duplicates it but they did it themselves it's their creation too.... they did the work. we are all on here for inspiration and pointers. i love this place! icon_biggrin.gif

WHAT ??? People Copy other peoples Cake ??? icon_eek.gificon_surprised.gificon_eek.gificon_surprised.gificon_eek.gif
No never!! lol
Ok I agree with you guys even tho I haven't personally seen a good cat fight yet... I mean if you have a beef with someone PM them and get it all out on the slate with them personally.. If you dont want someone to use your idea or simulair to what you made.. Easy DON'T POST IT in a PUBLIC VERY PUBLIC gallery! well that should be easy enough.. But you know there is always gonna be a thorn in the rose bush no matter how pretty it is.. Let's just all group hug and get along!

katleg,
you made some very good points. i've noticed that people seem to be much more sensitive on this cake site than any other one i've ever been a member of. i have no idea what cake you made that sparked this thread but its really quite petty to worry about someone "copying" your cake. truely, there must be more important things to worry about.

i dont thinnk that its THAT horrible..i just wish people would not take things to heart..its like having that crazy in law that says stuff and you just want to smack them, but you dont because its just your crazy in law and you bite your tongue and let it go..

i think people need to treat things like that more on here..

oppps....I just re-read my post and realized what I said may be taken wrong.............when I said "this one poster" I didn't mean you or anyone in here.....I meant I see one particular poster......

and the other was when I said I miss the arguements ...I didn't mean like I miss them bring them back....I meant I miss them... don't see them!!

oh maybe I should just go look throught the gallery some more ...hahaha

I totally agree. I know I have seen many beautiful cakes here and on the web that I have saved the picture to my computer. If I try to make a cake like it I'm almost afraid to post the picture here because I don't have a list made out of all the cakes and who the original belongs to. I don't want to be stepping on anyones toes but I would like to have free range to try anyone's cake. I know I can't make it an exact duplicate and most likely won't be as good as theirs but I would like to try. Should I keep a list of cakes and who they belong to so I can give credit? Guess I'm just confused on this so I just don't do it.

thats exactly what i mean..i hate that i feel aprehensive about posting a stupid cake! maybe that should be another section in the gallery..'cake i made, but dont know exactly who to give credit to, so dont freak.' or 'not MY original idea'

WOW!! it's such a bummer that such a great website has people that would actually bullie someone to take there pic's off this site. icon_eek.gif
It boggles my mind why someone would argue with someone they don't really even know.
We all have a common interest. We are here to learn share and teach each other.
I do believe that typed comments can be read the wrong way. When I send e-mails to a lady I know I always have to put happy face icons so that she doesn't missinterpret everything i am trying to say.
I have made some friends here No enemies........... yet. I love learning from all of you. icon_biggrin.gif
Let's play fair and be nice. What kind of example are we setting if we can't behave like good girls icon_wink.gif

I haven't been a member very long but I thought the purpose of this site was to help out other members with ideas, recipes, etc. I have seen hundreds of cakes on this site that I would love to have the opportunity to duplicate. I agree with the others that if you post a picture, not only should it be posted to show others what you have come up with but also to provide ideas to someone else. I am sure that when Collette Peters and Toba Garrett, etc. publish their books, they don't expect that their cakes won't be duplicated to some extent. I believe that God has given each and every one of us a special talent and patience for cake decorating and we should not be selfish with those gifts. I hate to get sentimental but I live in Louisiana where hundreds of thousands of people have recently lost every single thing that they have including family members so when I read something like this it is really disheartening. Life is too short and uncertain to live selfishly!!!

Well this probably will upset a few people but I feel I have to say it.
First of all, Antonia does give unselfishly on the site and I think you are missing the point if you think that her wanting to be credited makes her a selfish person. To many people, that is just a way of saying thank you and I don't think if a person wants someone to say thank you that makes them selfish. If she was selfish she would never post a picture or a tutorial or offer any help and we all know that is not the case.
This thread is upsetting to me because it is singling out a person who has made tutorials for this site and makes every effort to help where she can. She has made it clear how she stands on being given credit or not being given credit. I would have thought that knowing how she stands and finding out that someone did indeed copy a cake she made, then that someone would want to give her credit so as not to offend. Wouldn't you want to make the effort when you knew it upset someone? Is is really worth it to prove a point and insist on the cake decorator accepting your point of view?
And I certainly hope that someone is not going to again complain to Jackie that I am "soapboxing" by stating this, I don't think I am. What I am trying to do is make peace here and present another way of looking at things irregardless of how people feel about the subject. I don't feel that it is fair to bash the decorators on this site whom we all learn from and in my opinion, this thread is getting hurtful.
Hugs Squirrelly

I just want to put my 2 cents in- I am new to this site and I love it! I learned how to make a wedding cake this past wknd-on my own-no classes. *pat on the back* LOL-It actually is the best place to get information for any cake and if there was no information, alot of people here are willing to help you out. I also save alot of pictures to my computer for inspiration and ideas or even to duplicate them cause they are so beautiful. I THINK that anyone who posts there pictures here of there cakes, and it is there own, that they should state that under the cake description and say "give credit where credit is due" or something to that nature. I mean, come on, you don't know if any cake is the persons own. They might have copied it from here or the internet somewhere. So, how would anyone know. So, there is my OPINION! I definitely will give my help if I know it-I think you should give back! Thanks for reading.
