I just want to put my 2 cents in- I am new to this site and I love it! I learned how to make a wedding cake this past wknd-on my own-no classes. *pat on the back* LOL-It actually is the best place to get information for any cake and if there was no information, alot of people here are willing to help you out. I also save alot of pictures to my computer for inspiration and ideas or even to duplicate them cause they are so beautiful. I THINK that anyone who posts there pictures here of there cakes, and it is there own, that they should state that under the cake description and say "give credit where credit is due" or something to that nature. I mean, come on, you don't know if any cake is the persons own. They might have copied it from here or the internet somewhere. So, how would anyone know. So, there is my OPINION! I definitely will give my help if I know it-I think you should give back! Thanks for reading.

First of all, Antonia does give unselfishly on the site and I think you are missing the point if you think that her wanting to be credited makes her a selfish person. To many people, that is just a way of saying thank you and I don't think if a person wants someone to say thank you that makes them selfish. If she was selfish she would never post a picture or a tutorial or offer any help and we all know that is not the case.
This thread is upsetting to me because it is singling out a person who has made tutorials for this site and makes every effort to help where she can. She has made it clear how she stands on being given credit or not being given credit. I would have thought that knowing how she stands and finding out that someone did indeed copy a cake she made, then that someone would want to give her credit so as not to offend. Wouldn't you want to make the effort when you knew it upset someone? Is is really worth it to prove a point and insist on the cake decorator accepting your point of view?
And I certainly hope that someone is not going to again complain to Jackie that I am "soapboxing" by stating this, I don't think I am. What I am trying to do is make peace here and present another way of looking at things irregardless of how people feel about the subject. I don't feel that it is fair to bash the decorators on this site whom we all learn from and in my opinion, this thread is getting hurtful.
Hugs Squirrelly

this is exactly what i am talking about.. no one ever said anything about antonia!! no one singled anyone out! who is bashing anyone?? i put my focus on both sides of the arguement and i understand both sides! i am not trying to not say thank you.. im just saying that people are forgetful sometimes...and instead of blowing things out of porportion, pm someone...and get over it! i made an effort, and the person i talked to understood i hope, that it was unintentional... like many others! im just saying that we should be having fun not argueing, like now! people shouldnt be afraid to post their pictures because they cant remember whos cake they got inspiration from! this was not a hurtful thread, this was a thread reminding everyone that we are here for cake decorating and nothing else!

squirlly, you are another person that i have looked up to and you have done nothing but be helpful on any post that i have ever had, and all i am saying is that i hate to see people caught up in posts like this when its all just silly..its the internet...and we should just be giving and recieving advise, stealing ideas is always going to happen no matter where you are! and i DONT approve of it and i DO think you should give credit but im just saying, lets not argue over stuff, because it makes this site uncomfortable, when it is so informative!

Personally I had no idea that anyone was talking about Antonia. Which is a little strange because Antonia posted on this thread. Anyway, I'll just shut up now. Most likely I don't know what I am talking about

katleg,

I couldn't agree with you more! I guess that I am naive in thinking that this is why we post our pictures, is to show off our cakes and to give others ideas. One would think that if I don't want anyone else to see it (and copy it) then I would just keep it on my computer in the cakes folder or in my book that I show my customers. I guess at 36 yrs, I feel I am just too old to worry about getting credit for a cake or not. Personally, if I have a cake posted and someone wants to copy it EXACTLY, just let me know and I will tell you EXACTLY how it was made. I don't copyright my cakes, nor do I care if I get credit for YOUR cake. In a time when my husband is in Afghanistan and my only brother is in Iraq usaribbon.gif , I could care less about some petty little thing like NOT GETTING CREDIT FOR MY CAKE DESIGN. I say GET A LIFE and IN THE WHOLE SCHEME OF LIFE DOES IT REALLY MATTER IF WE COPY SOMEONE ELSES CAKE AND FORGET TO GIVE THEM CREDIT, I THINK NOT! If so, I am GUILTY- AS CHARGED!
I say repost it Katleg, Life's too short. thumbs_up.gif

Squirrelycakes, It was not my intention to suggest that any particular person was being selfish. I had and have absolutely no idea of who anyone was referring to. I replied because I think we all need to step back and realize that people will not always give us praise when due but if you are doing something that you truly love, that should be enough gratitude in itself. I am so sorry if my reply offended Antonia or anyone else. If I duplicate someone's cake on this site I will make every effort to acknowledge that person and would probably pm the person as a COURTESY prior to making or posting the cake. However, if someone does not do that they certainly should not be criticized for failing to do so. Just my opinion.

all I can say is that there have been several very similar discussions and its always around the same few... who also tend to stick together.

If someone attempts one of your cakes it is or should be the biggest form of flattery..... nothing else should be needed... provided they don't turn up on the tv and say its their own and sell it for zillions, who cares... its cake!!! We all want some.

Put your pics back.... I want to see everyones work.

Thinking of you, it is obvious this has caused you some hurt, I hope you feel better soon about it all.

People. Having some one copy your cakes is something you should be proud of.
When we bake, cook, do art and crafts etc and take them to someone else's place to eat, show or whatever, tell them where we got the idea, recipe and everything else from. NO

If we had to make sure that every person got credit where credit is due than it would be an extremely long long winded story all the way down to who invented butter, sugar, shortening, icing, sugar, cocoa plants, spatulas, cake pans, flour, salt, ovens, timers, skewers, racks (get my drift yet or shall I go on?)

If you don't want people to copy your cake than don't post it. Sure it's nice to be recognized as the creator, inventor, inspiration or whatever but it is not the end of the world.
As people make other people's cakes on here this is going to happen. But instead of being mad you should be proud to see the 5,10,15,20 etc versions of the cake you created.
That's my 2 cents. I love this site and ALL the cakes
Relax and be proud

I will say when I read something a little fussy or ask for directions and don't get them or get them wrong (yes, I was giving the wrong directions before icon_confused.gif ) and tell my DH he always get a laugh, he thinks and tell everyone I'm a secrect cake society icon_lol.gif
I used and idea from here and then pm'ed the person to thank them, but I will say, I was worried it might be someone who would get mad that I used their cake idea. YES IT DOES HAPPEN! Not often I don't think, but you know from being on this site, some would not like you using thier cake idea. By the way the person I pm'ed, was overjoyed I used her cake.
Yes it nice to give credit for an idea, but I don't think not giving credit, is being mean or rude! If it's posted on here, it's for all to see and or use period

Well, I am a little surpirsed by this whole topic. I must have missed all of the action! I found this site about a month ago, and I must say, I have recieved nothing but invaluable advice and support. I felt like I found a giant group of people that have encouraged me to continue learning and experimenting.

I even PM'd someone at night when I was doing a cake and was quickly starting to panic. Not only did she immediately respond, she offered for me to call her with any questions. All this from someone I just met. AND I have to give credit to everyone else that responded to my 11th hour post in a state of.... icon_eek.gif as I started at my cake project in fear. NOTHING BUT SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT.

Yes, I have noticed that some people are a little more outspoken and have a tendency to come across a little raw and opinionated on some posts, but I am genuinely shocked that people could be attacking others over making a cake.

I understand giving credit, but seriously..how many of the cakes are 100% original in this gallery? Didn't everyone get inspired from something? Somewhere?....I don't want to add fuel or anything, especially since I don't have any idea on any details on what went down, but aren't we supposed to be helping each other? If I saw my original cake replicated by someone else, my initial reaction would be pride. And sure, I would ask them if they saw my cake and start a conversation BEFORE I flew off the handle and got mad that my name wasn't attached to the info and blamed them for not giving me credit.

The truth is that anyone can see your cake on this gallery and make it for any function for anyone...anywhere. You really can't own the cake and monitor who's making it, so when someone posts the cake on this site, they are obviously not hiding it....

I guess what bothers me most is the way people react and the things they say to others when they are mad...even if they might be right. Tact. Respect. and once in a while...some humility would be good, too.

Let's play nice. And make gorgeous cakes. I have alot to learn, and I don't think we should get caught up in selective incidents that don't fully represent the entire purpose of this site. There are different personalities here, and it is very easy to offend someone you don't know. Especially when it's just words on a page without emotions...(loved the post about having to stick smilies everyone icon_smile.gif )

If you are a person that demands credit...perhaps put it in your signature...(kidding) Great...I'm sure I'm going to be the next person to be attacked now. icon_redface.gif Seriously, I think that some people are very protective of their work and just think it's a kind thing to do. If you are going to replicate someone's cake in an obvious way, (not just being inspired and going off on your own path, but full on, obvious copying) you probably should take the time to give credit. Just my opinion. But, on the same note, if you don't...I really don't think it's the end of the world.
If you feel guilty about it, just apologize. Or put a random comment that you forgot whose cake you saw.

There are so many ways of handling something. Regardless, unless you blatantly lied and said, "HEY, THIS IS MY ORIGINAL CAKE" then I don't know why they would make you remove your cake from the gallery. That's just....wow, believe it or not, I am lost for the right word. LOL.
It's just not good. I want to see ALL the cakes.

Have a good day, everyone.
Happy Baking.
Angie

Since this topic had been discussed many times, I feel it would be best to just lock the topic before things get too heated once again. We apologize if this offends anyone and we feel everyone's opinion on CakeCentral is valuable. However, since this topic has been discussed in great length and before it would tend to go in the wrong direction, I feel it would be in the best interest of everyone to lock it.
