Oh I so wished I'd didn't agree to this cake!!!!
Here I am with the tutorial from this site to guide me
http://www.cakecentral.com/article62-How-To-Make-a-Fondant-Fairy.html
trying to make a fairy I didn't realized how hard hand and feet would be!!! look at these tell me how I can improve this fairy
note they are done yet I plan on adding brown dots for eyes and pink lips, I also will add the little neckline or little coat on top of her shoulders, and add little details like painting her clothes with yellow and violet pearl dust
I just worry about the hands and feet looking like the Flintstones!!! Liis the person who made this tutorial is so talented I wish she was at my house right now!!! one more thing which face do you think is better the one I molded from Kelly the doll or the one with the ball nose and line for lips sorry pictures were not so close I could not figure out how to take an upclose picture without my flash whiting out the whole picture ![]()
I feel so embarassed right now ![]()

Hey don't freak out, you are doing fine. Just dress her up with flower cut outs. Look at my pic of "Olivia's Birthday Cake." It's amazing what a few flowers can do to dress her up. PM if you like for more tips.

breath! take a step away and clean the counters off, do the dishes, whatever...a clean space helps clear the frustration out and gives you time to chill. first off, i think it is not DONE- thats why it looks iffy- by the time she gets her eyes, hair, lips, etc, she'll be fine. remember that most people cant do make near what you can do- and they'll not notice the flaws as we will. dont give up,
i think you are doing a great job......i am not good at making figures....i have never attempted them...but i have a cake order in two weeks that calls for monkeys!!! so....i am starting to get nervous!!! but i do think that your's is coming along nicely...step away take a breathe and come back to finish.....i really do think you are doing a great job!!!
I can't help with any advice as I've never tried molding any figures. I just wanted to say that I think your fairy looks very good.
IF I was to try this and didn't like the way the hands or feet were coming out (I know that's got to be the hardest, I can't even draw them let along try to mold one) what about trying to make a butterfly and putting it on top of a hand and/or foot, then you'd only have to do 1 hand and 1 foot?
Okay, you say they're finished except the painting, but what about hair? I think that once you add the hair the purple and yellow girl's head will be too big. I think you have a really good start. I do like the face that's on the side better. The fingers and feet are better than you probably think. You should see my first fairy. I was playing with extra stuff and it was pretty bad. What are you going to make the wings out of?
I think she looks good. The only things I noticed is that comparing the tutorial to yours the feet may need to have more of a heel and the hands I think just need to be more gradual in demention. Please keep in mind I have not made these before and am just looking at the pictures. HTH

heres' some constructive critisism if you'd like it...the flat head wont be seen after its covered up with hair- so i wouldnt worry about changing it out. one thing that might help a little is to narrow out the ankle area a bit and put the foot at an angle.
i know how hard modeling is- i usually scrap it too, so if you've made it this far, you are off to a very good start and i think you'll complete it and be proud.
Oh, she's going to be fine...you aren't finished with her yet!
When you get all the rest of the details done, her hands and feet will be okay...you are your worst critic! I agree with melysa-the people who see her are going to say "Oh look how cute-she's ADORABLE!", not "oh my gosh, her hands are too big"!
Really, you'll be amazed how cute she'll be on the cake! ![]()

You might want to just flatten out the foot a tiny bit, and pinch a little heel...just a little bit! Now, aren't you glad you posted, and didn't just start over on her??? ![]()

What do u mean gradual in dimension?

KJT you made me laugh and all of you just made me feel a lot better I think I will go finish her and come back and post another picture I will paint both faces and then decide which one to keep I will try to fix her you are right I am freaking as always tomorrow I will be all worried about the bark on the tree stump!!! ![]()
But you made me feel better already and let's me keep going I'll be back!
Okay... I'll help as much as I can
1. when doing the head, try not to hold it.... if you have access to nappy liners these are great - otherwise a chux dishcloth is good too. fill up the liner/chux with cornflour/starch and tie up into a "puff" with a rubber band. then when working on the head sit it on the liner/chux. This will help hold the round shape of the head. Holding the fondant will sometimes warm it up and distort your perfectly round head when making the face.
2. Things need to be in proportion. the legs on a person are generally a bit longer thant the arms.
3. Elongate the body pieces a bit more - will give you more room to define the arms etc.
4. make sure the fondant is fairly stiff and not too pliable. anything pliable will not hold it's shape for you.
Hope this helps a little bit. And you are going in the right direction... just need to tweak it a little bit.
PM me if you need anything further.

Here's Debbie Brown's instructions for making arms/hands:
To make an arm, roll one long piece. Pinch at one end (wrist) to round off a hand, then press it down to flatten it slightly. Cut a thumb (slit) on one side, then make three cuts across the top to separate her fingers. Twist each finger gently to lengthen it, then indent her palm. Bend halfway up the arm to make the elbow and pinch at the back to shape it. Press onto the shoulder firmly.
Hope this helps.
Well, at least you can make a fairy. She looks fine.
I won't even atempt to make a fairy as I know she will look like a potato bug or even just a potato so I just buy everything I need. ![]()
I think you are doing a superb job and yes, we are our own worst critics.
Take a deep breath, relax and try your best. It's all you can do.
~Hugs~
Take a look at the ferries in my photos, they have ferry shoes, so its easier to do, no toes. And make 4 fingers not 5, there's a reason disney did it that way.
Now look at your own hands and feet, the are arms and legs are thick, then come the thiner part that are the wrist and ankles, the same way, you ferries should have them. That is one of the most common mistakes when making figures, no wrists or ankles. Don't panic, It's just sugar.
Once you put the eyes on your fairy, you will see a big difference...not sure how big she is but take some white fondant or gumpaste..cut it out with a round icing tip...you probably want to make the eyes a bit biggish...place them on the face and pick them up with a damp only paintbrush (Aine2 trick)..then when dry, take a very fine paint brush and paint on the black or I used navy on the last fairy that I made..it helps me to draw round or oblong circles on a paper and then colour in the irises so you can see how you want them positioned...then the little white "light" dot goes on..
Brush a little bit of pink non-toxic chalk or petal dust on her cheeks and you will see an instant improvement..
for the mouth...put the same dust/chalk on the end of a fairly fine paintbrush and give the mouth a hint of pink...I usually give a bit of pink to the nose (just a bit or she will look like she was into the sauce) and the elbows and knees...
I go along with elongating her limbs a bit and if you don't like her hands or feet..make some teeny flowers and put them on her hands as though she is holding them and put some flowers/grass butting up against her feet ..
I have used a garlic press for hair before I got my sugar gun..works well and work from the bottom of her hair in layers up to her crown...I place them on with a toothpick or damp brush...then if you put a flower hat on her head, you don't have to be too fussyy about her hair..
Also, PM me if you need a hand...I did a fairy/unicorn cake recently and so the "issues" are still fresh in my mind...I would be happy to help you.

Paolacaracas NOW I feel worse about my fairy yours are adorable how did you get the neck to hold up so well?? I should have started with this fairy earlier this week ![]()
I think she looks great. I have just started molding fondant but have been sculpting polymer clay for years, I have found it to be similar, and I have noticed it seems to all come together with the finishing touches. If you think you still need help with hands and feet here are some great tutorials on polymer clay that have helped me.

Mine is in fact Polymer Clay, ( and lots of practice ) For the neck you need to let it dry well, and also is good to help your self with a tooth pick inserted on the torso and coming out thru the neck.
Your fairy came out really cute!
i agree i like the 2nd one better. she looks more in perportion (sp?) than the 1st. I would maybe add a bow or flower to her hair. great job.
