What do you think of these cupcakes? I was pretty much liking the flower ones up until I added the pink middle. I don't know what I was thinking. I was going to make them sunflowers by adding chocolate in the middle, but I was decorating these at 9 last night and just didn't have the energy to do more frosting. So, I covered part of the pink up with the flower sprinkle. I know I've only been at this 2 months (at about 1 cake a week) but I'm dying for that *professional* look, which seems to be eluding me! I almost told DH he couldn't take these to work! icon_cry.gif

Anyway, what do you think?

I'll be really honest and say that I don't care for the cupcake on the left.

The one on the right looks wonderful though. thumbs_up.gif Made me really hungry.

I am new too so I might not have that much great advice. I think that I would like it better without the sprinkle in it but I don't think they look bad. I love the way you did the flower it looks very nice and I think chocolate might have looked more like a sunflower but the pink does not look bad at all. Only you know that you were going to use chocolate, I think you should be very proud of yourself for these great cupcakes!

I have to disagree with mbelgard... I really like the look of the one on the left. They would be so cute as sunflowers! To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of the pink myself, BUT who else at your hubby's work can do cupcakes like these?? They'll be impressed even though they're not exactly what you had in mind.

Okay I looked at your photos too and they are great cakes! I have to say I LOVE the melting snowman cupcakes, clever idea!! icon_smile.gif Oh wanted to tell you that I saw a really cute idea in a magazine for cupcakes like sunflowers that had mini chocolate chips in the center of cupcakes like these just a cute touch for next time maybe!

"Didn't have the energy to do more frosting".

Think about what else you might have on hand. An upside down chocolate kiss or an M&M could be a brown center.

I like the flower's petals.

The one on the right is perfect... as for the one on the left, I'd have iced it first and then did the flower. You can see the cake underneath the petals, which doesn't look good to me. But other than that, the petals look good.

They look good but the one on the left needs something. Maybe before you put the flower on top spread a thin layer of green frosting and then have the flower sitting on top. The one on the right looks good

I really like them BOTH! I think the one on the left actually looks VERY gourmet looking. (I am picturing it with the brown center.)

Both look very good.

I really do like the one on the left, but maybe fill it in a little more with icing so you can't see the cup cake through the icing. Just a thought. thumbs_up.gif

I agree, they are both awesome! But maybe fill the one on the left in just a little. Don't be so hard on yourself. I understand how it is though, I'm a perfectionist myself.

I love the piping and think the yellow looks great but I agree about the pink. I do like the pink on the one on the right but you were right about the chocolate for the one on the left but I honestly think people will like these very much.

I am very new to this too, but I think they both look great, and probably better than I could do! I agree with justsweet's idea of a thin layer of green under the flower to cover the cupcake on the left a little more. I think it would have looked cute as a sunflower, but it still looks very nice, and I can definitely sympathize with being too tired to mix up any more icing, as I have found myself often working on cakes later at night than I had intended. And I'll bet they get eaten just as fast with the pink centers as they would have as sunflowers! icon_smile.gif

Maybe the one on the left isn't going down as well as the other because of colour? The yellow is a very tonal muted colour and the pink is fairly bright with a white base colour so they don't complement each other so well. I hope this is a place you can come for some help if you ask for it. I think it's brave and shows a genuine desire to get better - good on you!

Thank you for all of your honesty. I really do want to improve...it's just not going as quickly as I would like. Sunday is my last week of Wilton 2 and pretty much all of the cakes I have decorated are in my photos, but I still think that I should be doing better.

Next time I'll definitely put some frosting under the petals, and go with chocolate for the center.

Now I want to go make another batch of cupcakes! icon_redface.gif

Anyone who got these would love them. You're doing very well with piping -- the colors may not be your thing, but then that's what experimentation is for! You'll find your groove and what makes you happy as you keep studying and researching pics.

Don't be hard on yourself, you're doing great!

I think you are doing a great job, I am with the others...the swirl one is perfect....as for the flower one, I didnt like the fact that you could see cake through it (as others have stated) but I think the idea of it is fantastic....just keep working at it!

OK....I have a question. For those that would have frosted under the petals of the flower one, what color? Would you have done it the same color as the petals? Green, for grass? Brown (if I had made it a sunflower)?

Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking on the color combo. I realized as soon as I did the first one that I didn't like it. Even orange would have been better.... Oh well, maybe I'll make another batch this weekend and do a bunch of different styles (and re-do the flower one!).

I always have a hard time with color combos and placement of things, I always end up getting my ideas from the galleries here! icon_redface.gif

Don't be so hard on yourself, your skills are honestly great! About the color for the flower one, I think green would be pretty, not too dark of a green. Or even just white would look nice I think.

I think I would have iced the same color as the petals--but I just had to say your petals look great! I can't ever seem to get mine to have the perfect little point on the end like yours! They look yummy to me--and really good for practice cupcakes. thumbs_up.gif

I think they are cute and your piping job is very well done. I probably would have liked the left one more if it were a sunflower like you planned though.
