Silly Question..trying To Estimate Quantity Of Fondant Need

I was trying to estimate the amount of fondant I would need to cover ... one 12 x 2, one 8 x2 and one 4x2 cake. I checked on Earlene's site and have seen it this way on others as well.... It lists the size of pan and then says "2 layers". By two layers do they just mean you torted the one cake? Seems like quite a lot of fondant in the estimation....
I THINK her chart is a two layer cake, each layer is 2", making the cakes roughly 4" high. However, it always seems to take more than you think, and the two inches in hight won't make as much difference in the total fondant required. and, itdepends on how thin/thick you roll the fondant.
I would much rather have more than I need, than be short and have to struggle to get it to cover the cake.
I think the best advice is to have more than you think you'll need. It's the worst to come up short! I make mmf and the Wilton scratch fondant -- if I were doing your cakes, I would make 3 batches of fondant, just to be safe. I believe that this would come out to be somewhere between 6-8 pounds. If everything went perfectly, I'd have leftovers, but if anything messed up, I'd have enough to fix it. ![]()
