Does anyone know if the Bakers & Chefs powdered sugar that you buy at Sam's Club is made from beet sugar or cane sugar??

It doesn't say it anywhere on the bag!

Hmm, I don't know. My Sam's only carries the 7lb bags of Domino powdered sugar.

I believe its cane......I worked for them and in the claims section, and when we had a return on it, or a transfer it always said cane on it...

From my Sams the powdered sugar product line is called
"Bakers and Chefs"

Just my review:
1. Gross tasting (too sweet, many complaints from people) and gritty in ButterCream vs. CH
2. Worked great for Royal Icing decorations
3. Overall cheap price ($3 for 7lbs) for cheap product

I tried to look for the company info to see if I could find out if it is beet or cane sugar and from my brown sugar bag all I could tell was that the company is "Sam's West, Inc." There is no mention of a website or phone#, only an address. Tried to look up on internet no luck. Sorry.

Gross taste? It's powdered sugar. It's not like they flavor the stuff. icon_confused.gif

Have not experienced any grittiness with this product and I have griped and complained about gritty buttercreams. I learned how to make meringue frosting just to get away from the gritty buttercreams. It even worked well with cream cheese added- no grit.

Same here.....no problems with it. My only problem is they sell out of it pretty frequently.

I have never had any complaints, either, I like it--except I liked it better when it was in 5 lb bags so the whole thing fit in my mixer at once...I hate measuring powdered sugar!

If you all Sam's or when you're in there ask and they can find out manufacturer info for you so you can find out for sure beet or cane sugar.

I have had no complaints using this product. No idea if it is cane or beet, though.

I use the Sam's sugar with no complaints at all...it's always very well aerated with no clumpiness or anything. Maybe because they sell it so fast and it's constantly fresh.

Don't mind measuring --- hate sifting it!

I get a cloud going, sniff so much of it that I feel like I'm taking some calories in through the nose!

My understanding of sugar (garnered during classes at the Wilton School)is that if it is pure cane sugar, it will say in the ingredients list "cane sugar". If it is beet sugar, it will say just "sugar". Costco's C&H brand is cane sugar, listed as such in the ingredients, and this fact is touted on C&H's website. At my Sam's Club the powdered sugar just says sugar in the ingredients list and so I won't buy it, no matter the price.

Cane sugar is more expensive and responds differently (better) to heating and cooling. Beet sugar is cheap and often needs more cornstarch added to it during processing to keep it from clumping. It is the cornstarch and clumping issues with beet sugar that can lead to white "dots" coming up in colored buttercream and at times to clogged decorating tips.

The advice I was given, and feel comfortable following, is to always buy cane sugar for the best results.

Just my .02

I've experienced the same as BlakesCakes--if it is, in fact, pure cane sugar, it is labled as such. Myself, I feel there is a HUGE difference between beet and cane sugar--I will only use cane sugar--also recommended by my Wilton instructor.

I've tried the Bakers brand from Sam's club, and I must say, I DID notice a difference in consistency with it. It IS grittier than Dominoes. I will only use it when I make fondant or royal icing (it is fine for that(, but I will not use it for my buttercream for the grittiness factor.

i've used that sam's club brand and haven't noticed a difference in texture, sometimes my hubby likes my icing better than other times, maybe that's been a difference, but me personally, i don't notice, my husband is one of those people that notices a 1/4 teaspoon difference in the amount of almond i put in lol

I us e the powdered sugar form Sam's Club all the time. I have not noticed a "grittiness" and have gotten rave reviews on my icing. I always sift though - maybe that makes the difference (??)

I've bought my sugar from Sam's since the beginning, but ran out so I had to buy the 2-lb bags of Domino's from the expensive grocery store. That is when I noticed a difference.

It wasn't a huge difference; but my frosting just seemed creamier and somehow better.

It has to be the difference between cane and beet sugar - but if flavor'd says it was cane, I just don't get it. I guess sometimes you really do pay for what you get.

My Sam's doesn't sell Domino powdered sugar in bulk. icon_sad.gif and I don't live anywhere near a Costco. Bummer! I'll just have to keep my eyes open for sugar on sale.
