Kim (Confectionary1) surprised me with something amazing tonight. Her husband is a photographer and he restored one of my cake photos from 1972. I couldn't believe the difference. What a lovely thing to do for me. The top photo is the restored version of the lower photo.

Are those royal icing frilly things on the sides? That cake is amazing! The lower picture definitely looks like seventies film.

Hi Shirley, that looks fabulous! Can you give us a little detail on how you achieved this cake? Is the lace work royal icing? Your skills are amazing!

I was thrilled, it was like seeing the cake when I was actually working on it all those years ago. The "Wings" on the sides of the cake are royal icing piped onto a pattern from a South African cake class I took in 1972. I don't have the patterns any longer. I laid a piece of waxed paper over the pattern and piped with a #4 tip in royal icing, then over piped with a #2 tip. Let them dry overnight and then carefully worked them off the paper. Turned them over and piped on the other side and let them dry again. Make 3, break 2, that kind of thing. icon_biggrin.gif

Kathryn, the bevels were styrofoam iced in royal and overpiped in the Lambeth method with royal icing. The cake itself is iced in buttercream.

Hey Shirley, no wonder you're so good at this...you've been doing it since before I was born!

The restored photo looks great, by the way. It must be good to see it again as it originally looked!

OMG, that is just so amazing; looks like the picture was just taken!

The cake itself is gorgeous; love the lacy "wings" - and using dummies for the beveled cake is quite clever.

Do you think the Lambeth style could be combined with the Sugarveil icing to achieve a highly stylized cake that could be eaten (without removing the decorations)?

That would sure be something icon_smile.gif

Jan,
I have never used the sugar veil and have not actually seen any of that type of work done in person so am not sure how it would look combined with Lambeth. I'll pass the torch on to you. How's about you try it and let us know how it worked for you?
And Kelly, I've been doing cakes since before several of my own children were born too. I started in 1959. Can you say Oldddd?

Shirley, you're as young as you feel (by those standards I'm probably older than you - although realistically I'm 37). icon_rolleyes.gif

Your cake is so beautiful and elegant. It must be so nice to have a photo that looks brand new of a cake you made so long ago. Enjoy it!

wow, those are really nice. I'm South African and feel really chaffed that you learn't that from a South African class.
