We had to have our 14 year old border collie put to sleep today. The house just feels so empty. He was our first baby and was such a good dog. I can't believe he's gone. My husband took him to the vets and stayed with him. He just went to sleep. My 8 year old was a little sad but my 6 year old dd cried for at least an hour. Monday will be hard when I'm alone in the house all day and no one to talk to.

HI SANDRA, I'M SO VERY SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS,
I WISH I KNEW WHAT TO SAY TO LESSEN YOUR PAIN . WE LOST OUR LITTLE SHILOH IN SEPTEMBER TO DIABETIES. IT'S A VERY HARD THING TO GO THROUGH , WE WILL KEEP YOUR FAMILY IN OUR PRAYERS.
WE WILL ALSO REMEMBER GMCAKES,CINDY6250
AND WILMA'S FAMILIES
I am so sorry......some folks do not realize that these are not pets, they are truely members of our families. It is very painful to loose a beloved furry family member. Those of us who have been through it know what pain you are going through......do something different on Monday - break your ususal routine, that will help some. It takes time for that void to go away.
My sympathies, pets are every bit as much a part of family as family because they are family!
Come spend more time with us on Monday, it might help a bit!
Hugs Squirrelly
Thanks for your kind words and my sympathies for every one else's loss.
Today is another day and I am feeling better. I know he is better off and is not in pain anymore.
Sandra
ps I guess monday I'll just be the crazy lady who talks to herself instead of talking to my dog!
When I had to have my 19 year old cat put to sleep, my vet gave me a card with this on:
Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

That is so beautiful
Beautiful and a tear jerker too! Thanks for sharing that!

I hope people don't think I'm morbid, but I just had to have my cats' ashes. They have a special place in their lovely boxes in my home, and when they first were gone, I felt comfort that they were, in a way, still with me. I got the following from my English vet when my 15 year old Zoe was put to sleep:
The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.
This is a serious tear jerker, but both poems are just so right at the time.
We humans and our pets! As you say, they are part of the family. Mine were my surrogate family as I was never able to have children. Now I have Zack (my avatar). He's a handful!
That is also a lovely poem and so true! ![]()

You are not morbid. We lost out standard poodle at the age of 12 to cancer. We had her cremated and have her ashes on our mantle. The urn is grey/black just like she was. She was such an integral part of our family--I mourned so much. But when we got her ashes back, everything seemed better.
My husband had given me a print with "The Last Battle" on it, framed for my birthday one year. That, too, gives me comfort.
omg the poems!! y'all have me cring this early in the am... i've got Asher and Dempsey(wolf mix and full boxer) and couldn't imagine life without them. i know that one day i will have to but i only pray it's a long time from now.
my sympathies are with you and your family during this time.
Both poems are so true. We told the kids that Beethoven is happier now-he's in doggie heaven playing with his friend who died a couple of years ago. It was still hard to let go even knowing he was in pain. We took pictures before he went to the vet so the girls would each have thier own picture with him. The poor dog could hardly hold his head up.
The house still feels empty without him(it's the first time since we bought the house that we've been without a dog) but I'm getting used to it.
