Yes, I just don't have time for gumpaste and I've never done them before so I couldn't.

I am putitng them on as a border all the way around the bottom of the middle cake and the bottom of the top cake.

OK, if using them as a border is only the head of the tulip going to show? If so no need to worry about wires, icon_smile.gif I thought they were going to be sticking out ot the cake. How many are you putting around the cake?

By the time you buy the flower and the pick for it, would probably work out about the equivalent cost of a silk tulip. Have you considered that path?

That might be a better option. If you put flower picks all the way around the bottom of the cake it may start to fall apart as they are quite large.

you wrote that is only in regards to their price then maybe you can just try to communicate back at them and ask if they can give you a lower price.(that is the title of your post isn't it?) icon_confused.gif ...if not, then you have a few choices : accept their price or like what maisiebake suggested try to find another vendor or follow the suggestions of our fellow cc'ers of what else you can do about it..

nglez09, I'm with Deani on this one. I'm a floral designer by trade and work with fresh and silk. The problem with fresh tulips is that if the venue is warm those tulips will open up fast and may overcrowd your cake's design. Silk tulips are in the stores now and there are so many of them that are life like. Someone mentioned the Afloral site and I recommend them highly. I've bought from them so many times I've lost count and they have great customer service.

Thanks a lot for the help. I called a florist and she'll give me each for $.50. Way lower than the bakery and these come with a cap.

Khoudek and Deani, the tulips are a special request. I don't know if they'd really want silk flowers. icon_redface.gif

I guess I'll be stubborn and go with the fresh ones and then I'll suffer the consequences and learn to learn. icon_wink.gificon_lol.gif

You might want to reconsider, and ask the client about silk. the stems in the tubes are going to take up a lot of room. It will negatively impact the stability of the base of the cake. Imagine even 10 under the base of your cake. And they will probably damage the top tier, too.

You might get away with fewer, but I don't think you can get enough to completely border the base of the cake.


If the lower circle of tulips is actually on the cake board, it will support the flower heads fairly well, without the addition of water tubes. They may still wilt some, but they won't be able to fall over.

I'm going to be making a tiered one that's the same size as the one in my pictures (14, 10, 6). I'm going to put the tulips as the lower border for the 10" (on top of the 14") and then under the 6" (on top of the 10"). Is this still applicable? I'm thinking I would only use about 5-7 tulips on the 10" and then 3-5 on the six inch (depending on the size of the tulips)? TIA.

If the cake isn't going to sit out a long time, and the weather isn't really hot, the tulips will be OK for a time. You can just use straws to mark the location for each flower stem, then stick the flower in at the last possible minute.

If you are going to try flower picks or the water tubes, they displace more cake and it -might- cause some problems. 5 around the base would probably not be a big deal.

Are your tulips going to touching the frosting? Because no matter, they will start to open, when will you purchase them? I would really opt. to use silk. They do have some really great silks out there.
