I was just wondering how many do this out of your home and how many have an actual cake shop/bakery business?

Thanks a lot!

Right now from home, most of my cakes have been gifts since I am not a legal business.

At home..I have no intentions on a bakery...Although when I get frustrated icon_mad.gif because I don't have enough counter space I wish I had a bakery. With an extra fridge., storage, counter space just a place to call my own. (sigh) I make my cakes at home for fun and sometimes for a little extra cash...

I make mine from home also and since I am not a business, I make mine for donations (I guess that would be the proper term!) But I go along with you, need more counter space, another frig, a few less fingers in the frosting...(sigh!)

I make mine from home too for donations!! I just wish I had 2 stoves, 1 large kitchen aid & a huge stand up freezer!!!!! I would go into business w/ a small bakery if I had my friends here to go into the business together~

I make mine from home for donations as well. As soon as I get a house (hopefully by the end of this year) I will turn my basement into a bakery.

I make mine from home too. Even to become a legal business and do it in your home is very expensive! So for now I'm at home. One day we'll convert the garage.

I'm from home too. This is a hobby for me. Hopefully one day it will turn into more and the habbit will support itself!

I make mine at home. The wife and myself are in the process of buying a house!! thumbs_up.gif The coolest thing about the house is there is a room in the basement and on the outside of the room is a hot/cold water tap and a drain. As soon as I get a few projects out of the way, I will building me a second kitchen!! thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

I do mine from home also - although I've only started and I'm worried about what to say to people if they ask if I have an approved kitchen or etc etc. I only do it for co-workers, friends, and family but I get real edgy when people ask if I'm doing it out of my home because I'm not familiar with the legalities of it and I really didn't want to mess with the hassle of actually having to get a tax ID and such since I mainly do it just for extra spending money and most of my business is hit and miss - not really a steady flow - sometimes i have 2-3 cakes a week and then I go a month without any......any suggestions on what people tell their customers who run cakes out of their homes but not enough to apply for legal businesses?

hehe... I'm doing stuff just for friends and family at the moment, but since my SO and I are moving in a few months, we're looking at homes with second kitchens - and where we're moving, that's easy!! I'll probably turn the second kitchen into a bakery operation; fortunately, it's inexpensive to license a bakery in Oregon - under $5,000 gross annually, the license is $75 per year. And Oregon doesn't require resale/tax licenses, only a business license if you're operating underneath an assumed business name.

Woohoo!!!

but am working on turning part of basement into a second kitchen
i found a huge industrial mixer on ebay and a convection oven....cant wait to get my room finished and to be legal.....then i will be advertising like a mad lady, and passing out business cards, cant wait! i have to jump through hoops first, messing with zoning and other gov. depts.

melodyscakes: What state do you live in, and why is zoning an issue? Have you checked with your state's Dept of Agriculture about the availability of a domestic kitchen license (and then getting one)?

Here's hoping that it ends up being easier for you than it sounds!
