Sandra Lee's Shameful Cookie Decorating (Corrected The Name)
Decorating By cuillere Updated 15 Dec 2005 , 10:24pm by MariaLovesCakes
Could be (for Paula Deen) that her shows were taped in upstate New York at Gordon Elliot's home, thus the reason for the New York shots.
Let me tell you something about my experience when I was a child 'star" heheh I love to say that, on Romper Room. That little mirror that they "see" you in? Well, it's not really a mirror, and you can see right through it!
I think you might be right about that, Cakeman...I believe Gordon Elliott is actually the producer or a producer of her show. Maybe he "discovered" her or something? lol
Ok...call me dense...but could you expound a little further on the second half of your comment...about the "mirror"?? It's late & I'm tired, so please forgive me for not quite getting that one... But I am intrigued!! lol
Basically her whole show is just that, "semi" homemade. The whole point of it is to make things look "homemade" with out all the work. Some people love being in the kitchen... some people don't. Same with Rachael Ray. 30 minutes yeah, but to buy all those precut, prewashed, prepackaged ingredients will say you time, but NOT money. There is not negative tone to this post. It looks like there is but please don't read it with negatism, really. I watch all these shows now and then, if you take away one idea that might help you out of a pinch one day, hey. I know Sandra Lee is "entertaining" to my husband. He says he doesn't care what she's cooking. (rolling eyes). I love Paula Deene to. Gordon did discovery her. I always wonder if she was previously married. She always talks about her boys growning up and how tough they had it for awhile, and they show pictures but I never hear mention their dad.mmmm just being nosey I guess. She seems like someone that would always keep you up.
ps. refresh me on the mirror, I'm old, I can't totally remember what your refering to.

You were on Romper Room?!?! I LOVED that show when I was a kid!! I so wanted to BE on that show!! I used to beg my mom to find out how! lol!! You absolutely bursted my bubble about the mirror! Waaaahhhh!!
OK--I believe I've made my opinion on Ms. Lee clear in the past--let's just say she's the "Queen of making a Ziploc a pastry bag". A little pet peeve of mine--can't STAND that! It's just like these redecorating shows that make you think you can tear off the back of your house and add a couple of feet---come ON--do you really think they do that ALONE in just a couple of days?!? Sorry people--with cakes and home decorating/repair--unless you KNOW what you are doing, it ain't that easy!
Don't like Sandra Lee's show--never have--don't watch it. LOVE Paula & Alton & Iron Chef!

I agree with everything you said. As for Paula's 1st husband...I saw a show once that explained just a tiny bit...She was married and I believe it said that he died somehow. So there she was with 2 little boys to raise and had not worked in quite a few years. So she started doing bagged lunches out of her own kitchen and selling them...which led to a little deli-like shop that she opened, which led to the restaurant, which is where Gordon Elliott discovered her & introduced the people at Food Network to her. At least that's what my brain seems to be recalling!! lol I could be off on a few of those tidbits, though!!
Could someone please enlighten us on the whole mirror thing??? lol Vitade & I still don't get it...lol
It was a show for little kids that had a mirror that swirled. As a 4 year old, it was SO cool!! Then the lady would appear in the mirro. Here is a link that shows the mirror. http://www.tvparty.com/lostromper.html
Rachel Ray is extremely happy. I'm glad I'm not the only one who is annoyed by the EVOO. Some of her food combinations seem really gross to me too. The other day she added pine nuts to cous cous (sp?) I think, she added A LOT of them, I HATE pine nuts. I'd rather stuff a porccupine in my bra than eat a single pine nut. And soy sauce with peanut butter? What IS she thinking sometimes?
I also agree with everyone here about Sandra Lee too. The lighting on her show is different than every other show and het set decor does change with every show, sometimes even during commercial breaks! Like on her Christmas show with the little red off the shoulder number she wore. During the first segment her cabinets were bare and after the commercial break they had Christmas cards and ribbons all over each one!
I love this stuff! I also like to watch for this kind of stuff in movies too. Like when it's all the same scene but one woman's hair style might change back and forth a couple of times. I live for catching stuff like that.

"A true friend stabs you in the front."
I have to admit that I did love the idea (which I'm quite sure wasn't Sandra Lee's idea) for mushrooms on a yule log. A little marshmallow with a Hershey's kiss on top, ADORABLE! I'm going to try it but my yule log will be homemade of course.

It's true...Rachel Ray is very very affected when she speaks, and it is annoying sometimes but I think she is a great host. She's vivacious, and she has a kind face. I love her food. Pine nuts in cous-cous goes right along with mediterranean cooking; it sounds great to me.
I don't want to talk smack about Sandra Lee, but I was wondering the other day when I caught her show, how she ended up getting on TV. I wasn't overly impressed either with her or her preparations.
Love Paula, Alton, and yes, Warren!! Everyone keeps saying how weird, strange, and stiff he is.
Guess what? Out of all the chefs, he is my HERO!! This is because he quit his job as a lawyer to BAKE CAKES!! Now he's making a fortune at it!! He could be as stiff as dried gumpaste, and I'll still watch him......he has alot to offer and I feel I can learn from him and take inspiration from his venture!!
Bakinupastorm...the peanut butter/soy sauce thing...GREAT!!! lol I make a dipping sauce with those ingredients, plus a little fresh grated ginger, sliced green onion (or scallion, people call it both), and a dash of rice vinegar....delish with homemade (or even take-out) egg rolls!! I also use it for a marinade for chicken, then bake and serve over sticky rice...yummy yummy
ellepal - I think someone mentioned something about her husband & his money was partly how she ended up being the "Canned Good Goddess" lol But I also think that she was another of Gordon Elliott's "discoveries"...oddly enough. Not 100% on that, but I think I remember seeing or reading that somewhere. As far as Warren (Sugar Rush) goes...I agree with you. From lawyer to baker to TV show host is a lot of big swings!! lol I think he's doing great for a beginner....much better than I would... Sure he's a little stiff, and obviously doesn't stray from the script whatsoever...but he's new at all of it & I'm sure he'll loosen up a little & let more of his own personality show through eventually. One thing I wish they'd let him do more of on his show: actually bake & show us how to make cakes like he does instead of the little parfaits & homemade truffles and things he's shown doing between segments.
Here is her BIO off of her web site. Not exciting if you ask me,lol.

bakingupastorm - Do you watch Lost?? Sounds like you'd love it. There are so many things to catch on that show, especially during Flashbacks... how they all interacted with each others lives prior to becoming 'lost'. It's such a cool show!
I wonder why they don't mention just what the "highest-selling home decorating lines ever invented" that she "created & patented" is??? That'd be interesting to find out...lol. To me, that's more of an accomplishment & something to be proud of than opening up a can of crescent rolls, slapping on some cream cheese, rolling them up, bathing them in soft, fuzzy lighting & calling them something fancy!! lol And why didn't anyone know who she was for that achievement....just for the Semi-Homemade? She is obviously a very achieved woman...and charitable too. That means she's really busy away from her home...and if I were like that I'd probably be a "Canned Food Goddess" too!! lol Thanks for all that info, navywife!!
Well, I tell you, I watched Sandra Lee's christmas recipes and I was excited when she said that she was going to "make" a yule log cake. I said hey, yule log cakes have some level of difficulty on them so lets see what shortcuts she has.
Well, burst my bubble!!! She pulled one out of the package and just decorated it with whipped cream, which she added vanilla to she said, to take away the packaged taste. Then she sprinkled coco powder on top.
I am into yule logs and was really looking forward to a shortcut. Oh, well. I still like some of her tips on stuff she does.
I just love how one comment on sandra lee has call so much attention to her show I'm sure she will love this lol.
JennT: Maybe I will give the peanut butter/soy sauce thing a try, after all I do like cashew chicken. Maybe it was just the ratio of her ingredients that scared me a little, I'll make it in moderation when I do try it, after all it's easier to add ingredients then take them out right? I was just REALLY turned off by the pine nuts recipie, like if you could juice a pine needle and drink it is what they remind me of.
rvallee: My mom love "Lost" but I'm a Desperate Housewives girl myself. I am constantly disecting that show, especially Bree's house.
Rachel Ray annoys me when she is always saying that everyone can get all those ingredients because she lives in the middle of nowhere and she can get it. That is so not true, we can't get alot of things where we live. We live in North Dakota and the nearest grocery store that even has something as simple as Nutella is 120 miles away. That may be a good thing since I can go through a jar in two days if I keep the kids out of it.
I was also wondering why they didn't go into details as to how she made a nme for herself. Just saying she's done things, doesnt' mean it's been anything good. Not everything at Target or Wal-Mart is high quality stuff.
I smell a rat, and it's name is Sandra. Anyone can write or have it written for them, a bio like that. maybe she's not REALY very proud of what she did early on, so she doesn't care to share details, OR, maybe it's just a bunch of made up stuff to get people to oooh and ahhh.
Oh, and as I said earlier, no publicity is bad publicity. Even for S.L. I think that R.R. is quite cute and adorable as a host, but she does get on my nerves at times. The only one that doesn't is Alton Brown. As for Sugar Rush, I was pretty dissapointed, we didn't need another food finds show. I liked food finds the way it was. They've just given it a new updated name in my opinion. I was let down, when Sugar Rush came on I fully expected this guy to actually do something of his own, not little segments here and there, all through the show. I guess people just want hosts anymore, not people who can actually fill 30 minutes or 1 hour of their own stuff.
Incidentally, Miss Lois was my Romper Room "host". I'd love to have tapes of those old shows, but it was 1971. Not a whole lot of Video tape from back then.
Navywife: I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with you on that one. That is a very impressive bio on Sandra Lee.
It's funny, like they say different strokes for different folks. I like Sandra Lee and Rachel Ray but I can't stand Alton Brown. I think he is boring and tries to be too scientific.

Which is why most people probably prefer him that I know. I'd much rather know WHY I can't cook something in Copper or why Glass is better, than simply being told, Cook it only in whatever. Baking is a science, if you don't understand science even a little bit, you'll never understand baking.
If you guys think Rachel Ray and Sandra Lee is annoying what do you think of the new lady (I don't remember her name) that does 3 15 minute meals and uses the same meats in different forms for 3 different meals. I think she is scary looking and is copying RR's show on short cuts.
Hey Cakeman, I was on Romper Room too! My host was "Miss Flora". My mom was going through some old things and just came across the pictures she took of me there, as well as my picture of Miss Flora. Ahh yes, the good old days.

Thank you for saying that.
I said the same thing in another post!!!

CSN, are you talking about the lady that is the Family Circle editor or something like that? Does she have short, dark hair and looks more like a kindergarten teacher than a cook? Talks in circles and tries to sound professional, but comes across a little "lost" in the kitchen?
BTW...regarding Paula Deen....SHE IS THE ICING ON EVERYTHING, IMHO. However, some people don't think so. I was reading some posts on Foodnetwork.com (I think that's where it was) and some southern ladies bashed her!!! OMG!! The nerve! They said that she was such a fake. She is real to me! I was born and raised in the south and, I KNOW SOUTHERN!! Her personality and accent's very typical.
...on Sandra Lee...my hubby watches her show. Personally, I think he just likes her semi-homemade breasts.
[quote="...on Sandra Lee...my hubby watches her show. Personally, I think he just likes her semi-homemade breasts.[/quote]
So glad someone else typed that "out loud"....HA!
Paula Deen is the epitome of Southern lady!! Hard to believe fellow Southern Belle's were bashing her lol You can't fake an accent that thick...not even actors can do a Southern drawl as good as hers...lol. I was born in Texas and raised in Alabama...good 'ole Dixie herself!! I am pure-bred Southern (hehehe) and can tell you that she's as genuine as it gets. In fact, IMO, actors/actresses should study her when learning how to speak as a Southerner....lol.
Well put, JennT!! I can't wait to see Paula in "Elizabethtown". I saw "The Making of Elizabethtown", and all the people on the set loved Paula.
One thing that Rachel Ray did was in one of her recipes she made a tomato cream sauce for paste and added CINNAMON! I thought no way this is going to be good. I made it and it was TO DIE FOR DELICIOUS.
I never would have thought it, but honestly it was incredible. I made it for a dinner party and everyone raved.
Anytime I've made any of Rachel Ray's recipes, I've had nothing but rave reviews.... they are all delish.

The one I'm talking about has sort of ash blonde hair shoulder length, has two kids (I think they are twins) they show her and her husband with the kids in a hot tub kind of. She opens her eyes and one eye looks smaller than the other one.

Ok, now, I've never seen her, but that description right there is just plain creepy.
Also, I love Paula Deen's personality, but kinda wonder how she's avoided a massive heart attack with all the high-fat foods she makes everytime I've ever watched her. Makes me kinda worried for her and the people who are following her techniques to the letter. But I do think she's an awesome person.
Rachel Ray is also a good cook, but I can't watch the full 30-minutes. She's so rushed and overly excited that I feel stressed watching her. I feel like I'm on a deadline!
Sandra Lee - I've seen her line in Target and wasn't that impressed by it. I wouldn't have bought it, but it's just not my taste. I don't really watch her show.
And to be honest - (neck on the chopping board here) I don't like Emeril Live. I think he's gotten too full of himself. He does some good for people sometimes, but most of the time he seems a bit puffed up by himself. At least to me.
Sorry for the long post, but I've been gone for a while.
