I Did The Best I Could. What Do You Think?

okay, this was a practice cake for me. it was pretty much practice of everything, torting and filling, the melvira method, using homemade frosting, and stacking.
it is an 8" and a 6" devil's food cake with chocolate mousse filling and bc dream frosting. i used drinking straws as support because i don't have any dowels or anything yet.
please let me know what you think. it seems the more i tried to make it better, the worse i made it, so any advice is more than welcome.
thanks!
Dont be so hard on yourself! I think it looks very smooth! Good job! ![]()
Ummm..if you are asking about the smoothness of your cake, it looks really good to me(much better then I can do=)! And I love the beautiful yellow roses, my sister would be thrilled to get that cake! Great Job, Jen
I think you did a great job on the cake. I also just tried the Melvire Method and loved it. You should of seen the looks I got at the store when I kept telling them that I had to have high density. Anyway, practice makes perfect and you are doing great. I haven't made a tiered cake yet so I give you alot of credit!! I will try eventually, I'm just to scared still!! Great job and keep up the good work! ![]()
Looks great! Smoothing gives me so much grief. I really should branch out and try a new method. Keep up the good work ![]()
awwww, you are all the sweetest things! thanks so much. i'll tell ya what, though, you should see the sides of the cake (i didn't take pics of that on purpose...lol) i failed to make a dam and my chocolate mousse bled through something fierce. i will know for next time, though. and i don't think i like the vines. i should have just left the flowers and the leaves.
i am going to try an 8" milk chocolate cake with chocolate mousse filling, peanut butter frosting and pirouette cookies for this weekend (my parents' birthdays). i hope it comes out okay. practice does make perfect and if i never make mistakes, i'll never learn, will i?
thanks again. you are all so wonderful!
Jessica,
Is that green border a chain link? I have not seen that one in a long time! That's great, very unique!
Well done!

ummm, i have no idea
lol. i just thought it looked cool. ![]()
oh, and you all are gonna make me cry. my dh liked it, but he has to be nice to me, he's my husband. lol. this is why i love it here!
I think you did a fine job
a few changes I would prefer is the flowers if they could curve and be more of a spray instead of a heavy straight line on one side. you might like it better. the roses are fantastic.... maybe change the tone of the green it seems a bit bright. ? I like the vines but a touch or brown would be better than bright green.
borders I prefer white borders but there is nothing wrong with your choices and you did a good job.... I also like to not use to many different borders but as a practice cake that is what you do practice borders
So I think you did a great job and the next one will be even better. Keep it up.
Awesome job. The buttercream is so smooth looking. I haven't used the Melvira method yet but I do have the rollers to try it this weekend.
I really like the vines coming out from the roses. I usually just pull a bunch of leaves out from the flowers, but I like this look! Mind if I borrow that on a future cake?
yeah! heck, if you like it, take it! on one condition, though. i wanna see pictures of yours! ![]()
