I have been asked to make mini cakes for a friends upcoming wedding...many, many, mini cakes (250!!!!) I know I need to learn to say no. UGHHH! Anyhow, I need some ideas on the presentation. I plan on just doing the single tier, covered with fondant, a ribbon and a little flower on top. BUT I don't know how to do the set-up. I'm thinking I need a custom cake stand?? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
I think it would look really pretty if you could somehow make lots of different heights and then use tule and white lights all around on the table. GL!
make sure you take pics and let me know when you post!!
I have seen some use those glass blocks from a hardware store with lights in them and tulle draped. I am not sure if you would put them on the same display table, but that would certainly bring a dimension to the display. ![]()
Also, I have used boxes (heavy cardboard ones) or something of that nature staged on a table without a tablecloth, in varying heights and placement, and secured with good 'ol duct tape and then the table cloth draped over the whole thing. You would push the cloth down around the boxes and it would provide a secure varying height display for a few dollars.
It may sound sorta cheesy but it does work, I have used more than one cloth when necessary - it gives a great illusion. Mind you, I have used this when catering with plates of food and desserts - they really hold up well. White tableclothes sometimes require a double up or a nice napkin over the box... I hope this explained this right..?!?
Hope this helps ...
Post pics I am sure it will turn out lovely. ![]()
Hey Val~that sounds really cool!! Do you have any pics?
No, unfortunately I am horrible at taking pics - the only time I do is when someone reminds me...
I have bypassed two cakes and a bunch of cookies in the last two weeks that I could have photographed.
But, it does look great and I promise I will take one the next time....
Oh, I found that link to the mini cakes on Oprah:

Linda, make sure you charge enough for this job. I made a 100 and it was the most exhausting task ever

AmyKakes is doing this job, not me! AmyKakes, take note of Paola's warning.
Nitu: I looked at your mini cake; and it's hard to believe it's only 2-4 servings. What size pans did you use for it?

Yes, lots of people asked me about the pan size. It is totally custom-made cake. I literary used three different size Pyrex bowls 3", 4" and 5", that's why I didn't get any space for decorate the edges. So I just did the bead border.
I took this picture from close distance that's why its look bigger. I had to do with some glass or another thing to major its height. Anyway I want to make one again after seeing oprah cakes.
Thanks

When you do a pic of a small cake, you should have someone hold a ruler or something next to it so folks can get a true perspective. I have a small 3-tiered in my pics where I had my daugher do that. Otherwise, they can't really appreciate the size.
You are so right, indydebi!
Let me explain.
Can you see my chair bar behind the shear? That bars height is 3.5 inches from the base and the cake was 2 inches taller than that. So the cake height was approximately 5.5 or 6 inches.
So you decide how much servings would be but the person who served this cake told that was perfect for 4 people in her family. Is this still it unbelievable??? ![]()

I agree that to show size prespective something should be nearby ... not necessarily a ruler, but even a can of tonic or something. I know when they show on tv little tiny infants that weigh a pound or two, they don't look so small ... until somebody sticks their hand in the picture!
Hi,
I did some mini-cakes recently for a taste testing. Bride needed some ideas. I like the suggestion of different heights the cakes can be set on. Different size boxes might work as an inexpensive stand or maybe styrofoam blocks covered with material. Good luck.
AmyKakes, do you know what you are going to do yet? I'm thinking maybe boxes of different heights under a table cloth with the little cakes all over at different heights. You've sure gotten yourself into a lot of work!
Crisseyann: cute little cake!
