This is my first attempt at fondont, I LOVE how all the cakes look in the books and though WOW I have to try that. I bought the wilton boxed fondont to try out. Is it just me or is fondont NASTY?!?! Is it just because I got the boxed kind or does fondont just taste like that?

It is the Wilton fondant..........everyone says it is nasty tasting. If you type fondant into the recipe search you will find several homemade recipes for fondant..........the most popular being the MMF.

with the MMF you can add extracts (any kind you want) to make it taste better or add a little popcorn salt to cut down on the sweetness. I tried the wilton brand a few days ago, and I tried every extract i had and nothing seemed to help that awful taste. hth

Use either Satin Ice or make your own MMF. I use both.

Great thanks! I'll be sure to try some others! I was also wondering, is there a better way to "Paint" fondont... I made a igloo cake that I was going to do all in fondont but since I hated the taste I did BC instead and only used the fondont for the penguins. I used watered down colors but that didn't work as well as I had hoped. I'm thinking fondont and water aren't the best combination.

I have to agree, wilton is nasty. i'm sold on satin ice for fondant. but here's a question, if i want the fondant look but the customer doesn't want the fondant, has anyone ever used rolled buttercream in its place? i'm anxious to try some, and i have a cake due monday eve. but my customer, who gave me free reign to do what i want, hates fondant. but it would look so much nicer on this cake! whaddaya think, ladies and gents?

frost cake with buttercream let it dry for about 1/2 hour then find paper towels without a design and use it to smooth it out, place the paper towel on it and smooth with hands gentlly it looks very smooth like fondant.

weddingcake1, i use the viva method all the time. that and the foam rollers. just something about the fondant has a smoother look, was just wondering if RBC can be used in place of it. I hate working with fondant, and it hates me back. it cooperates with me about as well as my kids do! just looking for alternatives.

Wilton fondant is out. I like to make MMF, it is easy and very inexpensive. BUT red and black.......... not worth the aggravation. Where should I purchase red and black fondant from? (how about red and black frosting?)

I love rolled buttercream Hears an easy recipie. One cup corn syrup one cup crisco, half teaps. clear butter flavor, one teasp clear vanilla, half a teasp popcorn salt and 6-7 cups of powder sugar. Its great and works just like fondant. To make it white chocolate just add a bag of melted white chocolate chips to the mix.

Another option that has become some-what popular is using candy clay to cover a cake, just like fondant. There are many recipes out there, baking 911 has nice info. Here is a recipe for it on CC...

alicegop....you can get red and black....Americolor super black and super red...I am tellin' ya, it will get your MMF RED and BLACK.....I wouldn't of believed it if I hadn't of made it myself!!!! The black was soooo black....I made tires out of it.....if ya can, order yourself some and try it out!!!

Oh yeah, to make it easier, mix it in after the marshmallows have melted...kneading with these colors can be messy!

Thanks mypastrychef...... do you get yours delivered directly or do you order online? The nearest cake supply is 2 hours from here... so it is cheaper to pay shipping than to drive to Modesto.
