Hi every1,

I normally put my cakes on a cake board a bit larger than the cake....8 inch cake gets a 10 inch board and a 10 inch box. I have a 12 inch cake due tomorrow, and could not find a 14 inch box. If I use a 12 inch board and a 12 inch box how do I keep the border from messing up in the box? Will it touch the sides?

Thanks for your inputs!

Well, the fit of the cake to the board will be pretty close, usually about 1/2 to 3/4 inch less by the time the cake is baked and you allow for shrinkage. So when you add the icing, you won't have much space left if any at all, for a border. I wouldn't do it I am afraid. I have taken to getting moving boxes for cakes of 12 inches and larger, they are much cheaper and the height is frequently adjustable. I cut down one side and re-tape it, that way you can easily place the cake inside the deeper boxes. Do you have any cardboard from which you can make a box? If you could make a box an inch or two larger and line it with the non-skid rubbery shelf liner, the cake wouldn't move inside a bigger box. Otherwise, do you have any kind of container you could put it in, that has shallow sides and is easy to place a cake inside of?

Hi Squirrely,

I don't have a moving box, but I do have a Christmas Hat Box that the cake will fit in....Actually once I read your post I saw it and thought...hmmm.....it will even make for a nice presentation....I will just use the lid as the base for the cake! I will post a picture when I am done. This would be a nice addition to offer people for the holidays especially if the cake is a present!!

That is a wonderful idea kiddo and much easier if you use it upside down too, easier to fit the cake in then worry about where your hands go as you lower it! Good for you!
The larger cake boxes are costing me $6.50 and are still only 6 inches high, which is why I switched to the moving boxes. They run anywhere from $1.20 to $2.60 if they are double walled and they come in such a good variety of sizes that I can fit any cake in. Much better than when I have to send away for the bigger ones, or worse, use Mailbox Etc. box at over $10 - yikes!
Some liquor store boxes work well too.

Hhmn CP, who is the lush, haha, you are now in disguise as Kiddiekakes, had one too many did we, haha!
Thanks Cakefairy, Cake Princess has been playing with an avatar that I use on another site, first she put a miner's hat on it for the month of November because I was complaining about the lack of sunlight. Then she put a baker's or chef's toque on it for fun because it is snowing here and I cannot get warmed up. So we Canucks call knitted caps toques, so it is a bit of a play on words, er hats, haha! She tried animating it but because of size limitations, it doesn't work well here, so I suspect I will switch to the unanimated one. Haha, wonder what kind of hat he will get for spring!

I think you came up with a good idea on your box situation. Sometimes I end up baking a smaller cake and adding a dozen or two cupcakes to make up for the extra servings.
