First time using it. What is the best way to roll it out. Should I use cornstarch or powder sugar ? I don't want to change the taste.

It works best to roll fondant on a lightly greased surface. You can use a sheet of plastic fabric or a rolling mat. It will also help you transfer the fondant to the cake.

If you use cornstarch, it is a bit drying, and may show on the finished surface.

I roll it out on Reynold's freezer paper and don't have to use any lubricating media. When I do, though, I prefer Crisco. Cornstarch gives fondant "elephant skin." icon_biggrin.gif

Freezer paper all the way! I love that stuff! When I use the slick side, I don't usually need any Crisco or powder of any type!

I wanted to taste satin ice before ordering, so I "googled" satin ice, found the website and clicked on the "contact us" page. I called and emailed them to request a free sample. They sent me a sample within a few days at no charge.

I've tried the Satin Ice (still a bit expensive) and it is good but I really like the MMF (much cheaper to make at home) and I flavor it for the full 16 oz recipe with 1/2 tsp vanilla, 1/4 tsp almond, and 1/4 tsp butter. It is really good. The Satin Ice I don't think is as sweet so it then becomes a personal preference. Good to know they send samples though!!

Honestly, it's been a while since I have tasted the satin ice, but I did remember it was a 100 times better than wilton's. The sample that I received was in a small plastic container (similar to a small margarine container, but a bit larger and flatter. The sample resembled a colorful checkerboard which contained a smalls sample of all the colors of satin ice that are offered...the colors are great, very bold. If you were planning to do a large cake that needed to be all one solid color, such as red, satin ice may be the way to go. Less chance of bleeding and you wouldn't have to deal with the mess of a comprehensive die job. icon_wink.gif

MMF is awesome though, no doubt...and a heck of a lot cheaper. Not to mention, if you are in a pinch and have a cake to do at the last minute MMF is the way to go b/c with satin ice you would have to wait for the order to be shipped to you.

I'm not too experienced with MMF, but heard that it tends to be a little harder to decorate with then satin ice (outside of just covering the cake I mean)? Does anyone have any insight on this rumor?

we had no experience with fondant period and went with MMF first, then tried satin ice, and we found the satin ice to be harder to work with? I don't think the flavors are always that great either for we can flavor the MMF in a variety?

we did work with the MMF for two weeks and researched remedies for issues too, I only found this forum last week which is a shame, so much good info here.

IMO the pettinice brand is far better than Satin Ice? anyone else?

I just don't like covering cakes with it. Just can't seem to get it right. It frustrates me to no end.

I am married. I don't need any extra frustration. icon_wink.gif

I love MMF for covering cakes. But for the other decorations, like roses, leaves and stuff I find that gumpaste is much better because it dries faster and is more stable.

I waffle between Satin Ice and Pettinice to cover cakes. I have found the quality of MMF tends to be a little poor in comparison but use it on the cake drums.

I always use Crisco and a vinyl mat to roll it out. When using my pasta machine I use powdered sugar because of taste.

icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif Too funny! (Because I can relate!)

I'm a fan of satin ice. I also recently bought ChocoPan to try. I've heard good things about it, so we'll see. But, I always have marshmallows in the house just in case!

The cakecentral store also carries Satin Ice now, but last time I checked, they were sold out. www.intotheoven.com and www.cakesbysam.com also carry it.
