It seems each time I take time to think about if I should continue with cakes or not I sit at my computer to check for orders and recieve something like this one.

The customer's husband was stationed in Afghanistan. One day when he was with his Explosive Ordinance team one of the members stepped on an old Soviet Anti-Personnel Mine. The customer's husband was 2 feet away. The young man that stepped on the mine lost part of his leg. The customer's husband was critally injured but has recovered. The two couples have become close friends and thought it would be funny icon_eek.gif to give the young man's wife a birthday cake shaped like the mine he stepped on icon_confused.gif . With the request came an image of a similar mine.

It will be an easy cake to make and I may not even charge them for it (You know - in appreciation for what they have done my my country). You HAVE to admit that I should be awarded first place for the most unusal request (that is if there is ever such a contest! icon_biggrin.gif

Lucky they didn't want you to recreate the leg! (YIKES!)

You win - that is a bizarre request! Good luck with this order. I just 'gifted' a large cookie order and shipped overseas. Its the least we can do!

That is very odd, maybe more so than the one I received many years ago.
A lady's husband was getting out of jail for the bank scandal in OKC and wanted the cake decorated with the Monopoly "Get out of Jail" card. I made the cake look like the card! I thought it was odd then, and I still think it's one of my more unusual requests.

That is really funny! I think it shows a great sense of humor...They have taken a bad situation and turned it around. Obviousley these people don't dwell on all the bad stuff in their lives.
I made my dad a birthday cake with 2 fondant fingers on it after he lost his 2 fingers at work. He thought it was hilarious, although I almost puked when he bit into the fondant finger!! icon_razz.gif

I also think its' awsome that your doing the cake free of charge for them.

We found a house in McKinney on Sunday and will be closing on Feb. 26. I can't wait. I know a lot of people in Texas.

It sounds a little warped to me. Just my opinion but, I can't seem to find anything amusing about this request.

WOW!!!! My dh just returned from a year long tour to Iraq....I must say....that is a sick sense of humor. Maybe it's just me but... The men and women that have returned here are still flinching from loud noises...I can't imagine how that person will feel! YIKES!

The cake is for the wife of the young man that lost his leg. He thought it was a fabulous idea when my customer suggested it. I just hope she thinks it is too!!!!!

I would not like that if my dh did that.....we spend every night worrying about them and I cannot imagine getting the news of injury, let alone celebrating it...YIKES! I am so glad the gentleman is OK.....but I know I would not like that.

Sometimes when you have witnessed, or even been involved in something horrendous you deal with it what seems to be strange ways to outsiders.

I know DH when he was a criminal investigator in the Army he saw lots of death and destruction and just like many in the police officer world they make lots of jokes etc to deal with it.. and to an outsider it may seem weird or strange but it is one way for them to cope with it on a daily basis.

This request may seem weird but, they lived it and survived it!

I am sorry, really. But that made me LAUGH MY BUTT OFF. I actually had to spell it out. WOW. Just when you think you've heard it all. "They thought it would be funny. . ." what in the world???? Well- I guess they're the ones who went through the misfortune so I guess they can think of it however they wish. I just have to say, "wow." icon_lol.gif

Before I finished reading the post, I thought you were going to say that they were requesting a cake in the shape of the lost leg! Boy was I glad it was of the mine instead.

Maybe this is their way of celebrating life. After al they did both survive! What is normal for us at home is a world different for the ones over there. If this cake was ordered for a big family gathering it'd be one thing, but if it's for a small b-day thing it might be okay. I just hope it doesn't upset the b-day girl.
Good luck!

I hope the husband knows his wife well enough to know she will find the humor in it. I certainly wouldn't. icon_eek.gif

If both husbands think it's a good idea and since the couples are friends... I take it they all know each other very well.....I would have to give them the benefit of the doubt that they know what they are doing.... I don't think there's anything strange about it. Like others have said... they survived a horrendous ordeal and anything, anyway they see to move on, find humor in it, etc I think shows an amazing outlook on life!!! Bravo to them I say! and be proud to make it for them..although I can clearly see why it would make you uneasy.

People have all different opinions... but I don't think anyone can and should judge the way someone copes with a situation like this... (sorry my Dh is in the military and I guess seeing people call these men "warped" got to me a bit)

I've lost a child and to ME a baby shower cake with a mother's pregnant belly or in the shape of a baby is "weird" and "warped" because the thought of cutting into a pregnant belly or baby like that makes me absolutely sick.... to others it's a beautiful cake.. because of my experience it affects me differently than some.

Anyway that anyone can find to cope with tradgedy, loss, etc (that obviously isn't harmful to others) .... needs to be celebrated.

The mine did not destroy them, but now THEY are going to devour IT!
Actually from what I've read about people surviving a crisis, it sounds quite healthy.

My DH returned home from Afghanistan from a 16 month deployment. I have to say that the way they train these guys to cope with tradegy is unreal. Anything that would make me sad/depressed/frustrated icon_cry.gif, he ALWAYS find a silver lining! thumbs_up.gif

BUT to each his own, and wierd or not....you have to post the finished product!!! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Odd? Yes! Weird? Yes! But, having been a nurse for 26 years......it's no more "weirdo sick" than I am sometimes!

I just recently found a website for a lady that carves the newborn baby cake, which by the way is incredible. I showed it to my son (always interested in my cakes) who said I would feel like a CANNIBAL if I ate any of that cake!

I agree....you HAVE to post a pic and also let us know how the wife reacted! I hope it is positive!

WOW! I was afraid it was going to be the leg too.....

I think it's very odd but I guess I haven't had to go through that situation so I don't understand the humor in it - or the one w/ the two lost fingers... yuck! But yeah to each his own - we've certainly made odd things out of cakes... heck the ones that look like babies are too much for me - yeah great art but how can you cut up and serve a cake that looks like a baby???

Hey all of you with husbands or wives or sons or daughters that are fighting for us - tell them thank you. Although a lot of people are against this war, I think we're all appreciative that they are out there fighting for our safety and freedom. My husband was in Kuwait for a year and while I knew he was pretty safe it was still a sucky situation. I'm glad both of those men came home alive and let's get everyone else back alive too! - Although I do feel we'll probably always have an army base in Iraq... I don't think we'll ever fully leave - but I pray for the safety of everyone there and in Afghanistan and any other dangerous country. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO!

I don't think the request is all that odd or weird. These two couples have had quite the experience together and are obviously close enough to know the recipient's sense of humor. My sister used to work for a plastic surgeon and they had options for people who wanted one to get free breast cakes following mastectomy repair. It all depends on the recipient.

I agree. Whatever it takes to cope. I did have a request once from a lady that was about to have a mastectomy and wanted nipple cookies for a party she was having for the breast that she was losing. There has to be a silver lining somewhere. Sometimes you have to look very hard.
