Hi lovelies! I'm truly sorry to be a pain to you all......but these forums are so helpful and I know you'll have the answer to this!

How would I make these indentations onto the cake, as pictured below.

Would I cover the cake first and then use a ball tool to make the "holes".

Or would I make the holes into the cake using a melon scoop first, and then cover with fondant afterwards?

Thanks all! And this cake is so cute isn't it?

I would probably make the holes first, then cover and press the fondant into the indentions. Otherwise, I doubt they would be pronounced enough to get the effect you're looking for.

And yes, that's a very cute cake!

Forgot to add - it looks as if the 'holes' are also colored in a bit darker than the rest of the cake, to add to the effect.

I'd say it depends on the kind of cake you're making, and how crusty your edges are. If you're using a moist cake and your edges aren't crusty, you should just be able to poke the ball tool in there to make the holes, especially if your fondant is close to the 1/4" recommended thickness.

I think add them after. They aren't very deep and an impression in the fondant should get the look.

I would use the ball tool to make them after the cake is covered then paint the impressions to highlight the depth.

Thanks for your ideas everyone. I'm going to make the mice look like these:

What do you think? I like these ones better- they are much cuter.

I think that is an adorable design. I would love to have a reason to make the mice with cheese. Looks like a ton of fun I just had to bookmark the site. Now I just have to learn how to use sugarpaste. Is sugarpaste like fondant?

No. Sugarpaste dries hard, so that allows you to keep the mice as a memento for a loooong time. Sugarpste is used specifically for modelling.
