Hey there Everyone! Just thought that I'd let you know what I've been up to lately. I have done quite a few cakes in the last month but I'm in my "Slow" season right now. Do you other decorators have that? Business usually Booms from Mid-Feb. until early Sept. so I'm enjoying my break. But anyways, back to the topic. While I was decorating my cakes during the busy season I kept thinking it would be GREAT if I could teach a class. Not just any class. I wanted to teach decorating techniques to pre-teens and teens. While I was trying to go about a way to advertise how to announce it, I had a mom call me. She is my daughter's Cheer Coach. She asked if I would be willing to teach her daughter cake decorating. I was thrilled! Nervous too but mostly Thrilled. So we decided on starting in October. When I went to the states I picked up the course books for all three courses. The closer time got the more nervous and excited I got. After All I haven't made most of the flowers I learned in class since I took the class almost 3 years ago. Well course one flew by and now we are in course two. Last week I taugh my ONE and ONLY student (SHE IS PHENOMINAL! Let me tell you 11 year old kids pick up on things so quick!) the mum and this week we did all the other flowers except the victorian rose. We'll be doing that next week! But anyhow...She picked up on the flowers so quickly and is such a great student. Not only have I been teaching her the wilton method...I've been teaching her the stuff I have learned here on CC. She is always asking me when are we going to do this and when will we do that. I love how excited about it she gets. When she "Grows UP" she wants to be a Chef...and I can totally see that happening. She is only 11 and already making BETTER DAISIES than me! Sorry you guys I'm just so proud of her! Today she told me that she just recently joined CC so I can't wait until she starts making and posting pics of her cakes! I'm just so glad that I have been able to pass along my knowledge and LOVE For decorating to somebody else. I usually just talk somebody into taking the classes...but this has been so much fun. So much that I have been to where I don't care if I decorate another cake. I LOVE teaching this age group. If there are any other teachers out there who can share hints and tips for me that would be great. I would also like to know if there is a paticular age you like teaching! Now I just can't wait until my 5 year old is old enough. She is constantly wanting to learn...but I just can't see her getting the pressure and hand eye cordination thing going for the flowers just yet! Ok so now you know what I have been up to and why I haven't posted much. I have missed you guys!
Tammy

I loved reading about your excitement! It sounds like you're a really great mentor and teacher thumbs_up.gif . Your student is so lucky to have someone as encouraging as you. They need that sooo much! Especially at that age. I bet you've made a big difference in her life. I think that's what's so great about teaching/giving to others. It makes your own life more meaningful too.

That was a wonderful post.......There is nothing better than sharing something you love with someone else. Your little girl will still be able to do a lot and learn a lot if she is interested.
My grandson who is getting ready to turn 3 loves to help me....he will say....Nanny are we going to bake a cake or cookies?
Keep up the good work.
Debbie

MrsMissy, I do have some other people wanting to take the class I just have to let them know when. My student has been going to Cheerleading and to Class telling her friends and now they are interested. Also the Mom of my student told me that she has a few people asking about it. This has all been so exciting and I had to share it with you! So if any of you think that you would even just MAYBE want to teach I say GO FOR IT!!!!

Working w/younger kids is a lot of fun. they have a fresh view of decorating IMO. I'm a scout leader, and, due to the necessity of being "politically correct" we can not always have a "holiday party" for christmas. Not everyone celebrates. So, I put it up to the girls and they thought it would be cool to do cake decorating. We did giant cookies in a winter theme using frosting, marshmallows, grammy bears, etc. They had so much fun w/that they want to do it again this year. This year, we are going to do small character shaped cakes instead (and they'll learn to use the star tip). With 17+ girls in the troop, it's hard to teach all the flowers and such, so this should be fun. I"m really looking forward to that last meeting in December! You could make up a flyer to put at your local girl scout council to do workshops for them too.

Hey Sis!

It's about time you told everyone about your teaching! Ya'll she has been so excited about it for weeks!! She'll be a wonderful teacher to kids because she is a big kid herself!!!! She's very patient too (with other kids, LOL!!). Ideas just pop into Tammy's head & away she goes with them! She was the one who talked me into taking decorating classes a year ago. So glad she did!! We both have the passion for decorating & teaching! WAY TO GO SIS!!! Keep up the great work!!!
