I'm getting more serious about my decorating (finally getting licensed this year - tired of working for jerks), and am upgrading a lot of my equipment... the problem is what do I do with the old stuff?

I've got airbrushes, Wilton pans, etc. My first thought was eBay, but I know so many sellers have trouble with them, and their fees are outrageous!

Is there another venue through which to sell decorating stuff? Yahoo group perhaps?

I figured you guys would know...

Thanks!!!

You could try Craigslist but then you will be dealing with face-to-face encounters with strangers, and a bunch of scam emails to sort through.

I've been selling on eBay since the late 90's and have never had a problem. Sure, you pay a small percentage in fees but to me, it's well worth it to be able to sell online.

Why are you cutting loose with Wilton pans and airbrushes? You surely will still use these in your business.

You could always try your local newspaper/classified magazine.

I am upgrading to a better airbrush system - and I cannot sell cakes made from the Wilton pans (copyright infringement) - so I might as well sell them to someone who just bakes for family/friends.

I've spent so much in the past year on decorating supplies, and I'd like to be able to recoup some of the expense by getting rid of some of the things I don't use anymore.

LadyCakes.com has a section for selling cake stuff. You could try there. Other than that I'd say E-bay, garage sell or resale shops.

Is there a place locally that does Wilton classe? Maybe you can put a flyer up for the students to see? Or maybe a local cake store you can post another flyer?

Please pm me with a list of what you have available and prices. My best friend and I are just getting started and would be very interested in buying second hand items that are in good condition. Just let me know. Thanks a bunch!

freecycle now has a garage sale group. You might be able to contact your local freecycle chapter and find out how to join the garage sale group and list your stuff on there. Freecycle is for advertising things you want to give away and the garage sale one is for things you want to sell or trade. More local that way too.

You need to check - there are quite a few Wilton pans that you can use for retail sales, even a few of the 'people-shaped' pans. There was a post on this subject about a week ago stating which were copyright free.

HI all... I got an email from Heath this morning about listing items for sale on cc... I never actually listed just mentioned it.. they want to stay out of trouble, so just watch out...I promised him I wouldn't mention my for sale stuff any more.... just thought you might like to know.. I was also trying to get rid of duplicate pans when I did my post, but just wanted to make everyone aware.

Out of trouble in what way?

I think in general just to keep CC from being a selling forum and any other legal issues. I just understood it to be that. I had posted a forum asking if people thought it was ok for me to list my pans on ebay for sell with a blurb saying I was donating the proceeds to CC.. that could have been what he meant in regards to legal stuff, them accepting payments or donations from me on my proceeds from an ebay sell. I just thought I would mention it since I was contacted about it too icon_smile.gif

We do not allow the cake central forums to be used to advertise personal items for sale or for trade.

We do not want to get stuck in the middle of "transactions gone bad", nor do we want the forums cluttered with "swap meet" threads.

I understand that. I just thought I'd read (either here, or in one my MySpace decorating groups) that there was somewhere online to sell used decorating supplies. I didn't expect to sell them here, I was hoping to be pointed in the right direction (and was hoping that direction wouldn't be eBay). LOL!

Thanks for your help.

Good luck with everything!

Interesting post....I would like to see what suggestions folks come up with also (besides Ebay), although I have sold several pans via Ebay with succes and very nominal fes. I'm thinking about selling my licensed pans also.

Have you got a local college that does cake decorating? It might be worth placing an add there. New cake makers would be happy to get a chance at buying bits. Or why not post some photos of what your selling on Cake central in a forum, maybe there are some people near you area new to the trade who might be interested.

Depending on how much money you have invested in this equipment. Have you considered donating it to a battered woman's shelter? The would be a great place to help someone and I am sure it would be greatly appreciated. Even a childrens shelter or juvinile hall. Somewhere that people could use the things on the chance that it might give them a goal in the future, to learn to decorate cakes and possibly get a job at a bakery somewhere.

The creation of a Buy/Sell/Trade forum would serve to keep the forums uncluttered. Kind of like the Lounge...a place for all those personal, off-topic discussions that many of us lobbied for way back when.

It's too bad for CC members, because this would be an ideal place for people to buy/sell/trade their hobby-related items. This website could simply be modeled after any number of giant, successful free websites, such as ReefCentral.com, and you would bear absolutely no liability in "transactions gone bad."

If that were the case, website owners/admins would never put themselves at risk.

Both of your objections are easily accomodated with a) the creation of a specific forum; and b) some administrative legalese in the form of another "sticky" about the owners/admins/mods not being responsible for nor will act as mediators or become involved in any disputes between members. This has been successfully done for more than a decade now on other sites.

It's really just a matter of your personal choice rather than any legalistic or website issues. icon_smile.gif

I would love it it this site would implement such an idea. I would love to be able to list an item at a specific price, and not have to hike it up to accomodate eBay's fees. And also, be able to list it until it sells... not hope it sells within 7 days or be faced with relisting it (and the associated fees).

I really thought there was a group on Yahoo or something that did this - which is why I asked. Perhaps no one here knows about it, or I misunderstood what I read (it was at least 6 months ago that I saw that post)

I thought of another idea....if you have any local "Vocational Schools" they usually offer a culinary program. That would be a great place to list some things for sale so the students could stock-up!
